HERALD
Wednesday, Septem!
Can we have Christmas
in September?
PENNY REYNOLDS
Rusk
The other clay, I went to
dinner with a friend who vol-
unteers at Good Samaritan
in Rusk. I really didn't know
what Good Samaritan is, so
during dinner, she explained
its purpose.
Do you know that it's not just
clothing that Good Samaritan
distributes?
Rusk citizens young and old
come in for clothes and for
other things that we never
think of, and many of the items
are in short supply at Good
Samaritan.
These items include soap,
deodorant, toothpaste, sham-
poo and similar types of toi-
letries. I asked where Good
Samaritan gets merchandise
that they give away,
I said "give away,'' because
unhke many other charitable
institutions. Good Samaritan
doesn't charge for anything.
She told me that most every-
thing they share comes from
the generosity of people like
you and me. What a learning
experience that conversation
turned out to be.
As I drove from her home, I
slowed to marvel at our beau-
tiful town, and then it hit me.
Why don't I go to Good Samari-
tan and donate some toiletries.
Then, I thought, "Maybe the
good citizens of Rusk, like me,
don't know too much about
Good Samaritan and, especially
their needs.''
So, I came up with this plan.
I'm going to buy a bunch of
toothpaste, soap, shampoo,
deodorant and any other toi-
letries and donate it to Good
Samaritan.
Will you join me?
I know the wonderful people
of Rusk that I have come to
know and love could do without
an extra ice cream or candy
bar and instead buy a box of
soap, toothpaste^ deodorant,
shampoo or anything else that
someone could use.
Drop it off at Good Samaritan,
203 West 2ndStreetin Rusk, or
at the Rusk Chamber of Com-
merce office on Main Street.
If you need help with trans-
portation, call the Chamber at
(903) 683-4242 and I'll come and
get it from you.
Further, if you would hke to
donate money, I'll go to the store
and buy these supphesfor you,
as I would for myself.
Let's show those in need what
Rusk is really like. Why not
have Christmas in September
for Good Sam aritan?
The Christmas spirit can put
a smile on those in our beautiful
town who need our help. And,
who better to do that than the
wonderful residents of Rusk?
I hope to see you at the store,
and when I do, I'll give you a
heartfelt "thank you.''

Cherokee County cities post healthy
growth year-to-date in sales tax rebates
In the important year-to-
date column for sales tax
rebates, all cities in Cherokee
County are showing signs of
growth and healthy econo-
mies, with the lone exception
of Cuney.
Leading the county in
increased sales is Alto, with
a 28.45 percent increase
the year — compared to the
same period a year ago.
Jacksonville is second with
a 13.5 percent gain, followed
by New Summerfield, 11.36
percent: Rusk, 5.49 percent:
Wells, 5.22 percent.
Cuney is showing a 1.40
percent decline for the first
six months, and Cherokee
for the first six months of County is posting a modest
.45 percent increase.
In the chart below, sales
tax rebates in the first
column reflect purchases
made during the month of
June at local retail stores.
Sales taxes are remitted to
the state comptroller's office
in July and rebated to cities,
counties and taxing districts
in August.
Statewide, this taxing
period represents the 36th
consecutive month of sales
tax growth.
State Comptroller Carole
Iveeton Strayhorn said the
statewide average for cities is
up an average of 14.3 percent
and I 0.3 percent for counties.
Approximately $508.4 million
was collected this cycle.
