Editors Note:
We went to press
early this week,
because of the
Christmas holi-
days, so we don’t
have a poetry
page by Virginia

news of Southern

Vicki Ochojski.
Also, exams have
kept Lance Knight
from contributing
this time,but
they’ll all be

establish a town,
which was offici-

Dr. McNeill was

To .know the exact
age of a tree is
somewhat unusual
and expecially if
the tree is 75
years old as this
_pecan tree is. It
was planted the
first day of the
new century,
Jan. 1, 1900, by
Mary McNeill
Borders.
For many years,
a spacious Victor-
ian house stood
just a few feet
away from this
tree and was the
home of Dr. and

his dental prac-
tice in Stephen-

and continued this
practice here
until he was sud-
denly struck down
by the deadly flu
of 1918.
That dread, plague-
like disease oc-
curred over all
the world and
caused an esti-
mated 25 million
deaths. A number
of Stephenville
citizens still
vividly remember
that epidemic, and

By delaying the

they could name
