were moved onto the campus and served
as temporary classrooms.
President Howell realized that the
size of the campus was inadequate
for future growth. He was instru-
mental in the acquisition of addit-
ional land on the west side of the
original college property.

The President's home on the campus
of Tarleton State University was
built in 1923. There have been 3
college executives and their families
live there.
Dean and Mrs. J. Thomas Davis and
their children were the first to
occupy this home. Dean Davis had
succeeded Dr. James F. Cox, who had
resigned to become president of
Abilene Christian College. . Before
^this residence was built, the Davi
family lived in a single story frame
house where the Lula Gough Women's
Dormitory now is. This frame house
was destroyed by fire in the middle
1930's.
During the Davis administration,
Tarleton College grew from an obscure
junior college to one of the out-
standing 2 year colleges in the
state.
Colonel and Mrs. E. J. Howell and
their two ch idren occupied this home
in 1945. With the end of World War
II, twelve million servicemen re-
turned to civilian life, and many of
these ex-GI's enrolled in colleges
throughout the country. The enroll-

Tarleton was renamed Tarleton State
College in 1949. In 1959, Tarleton
became a senior college. President
Howell retired on August 31, 1966.
Dr. W. O. Trogdon became president.
September 1, 1966. He, Mrs. Trogdon.
and their two children occupied this
home at that time. The Trogdon
administration has seen the begin-
ning of Tarleton as a state uni-
versity. A number of new buildings
land parking’lots have been built. A
major expansion of the Agricultural
Department and its facilities are
now in progress.
Tarleton became Tarleton State
University in 1973.
The people of Stephenville have
always been proud of the three
competent and able executives who
have lived in this residence. This
university has come a long way since
its humble beginning as Stephenville
College in 1893.
Ed.Note: That 1893 is not a misprint.
Dr. Thompson maintains that the
date is 1893 and not 1899.
