EAST TEXAS
2 arrested, charged with church arson
Authorities have arrested,
and charged two men in con-
nection with one of the 10
church arson fires occuring in
East Texas since Jan. 1. Three
other churches were targets of
attempted break-ins, and in-
vestigators beheve those and
the remaining nine burned
churches are also connected to
these men. The investigations
are ongoing.
The two men arrested
were Jason Robert Bourque,
19, of Lindale and Daniel
George McAllister, 21, of Ben
Wheeler. They had attended
the First Baptist Church
in Ben Wheeler together.
Bourque was arrestedwithout
incident in Van Zandt County
and transported to Smith
County and McAllister was
arrested without incident by
Texas Rangers in San Antonio
and also transported to Smith
County.
"By working closely with
our local andfederalpartners,
we brought tremendous re-
sources to this investigation,
working around the clock, and
culminating in these arrests.
The arsons of these houses
of worship were despicable
and cowardly acts and Texas
won't stand for this kind of
criminal activity," said Steven
C; McCraw, director of the
Texas Department of Pubhc
Safety.
The men were arrested by
a task force created to find
those involved and stop the
arsons, The task force in-
cludes hundreds of local law
enforcement officers, more
than 200 personnel from the
DPS, including Texas Rang-
ers, Highway Patrol troopers
and Criminal Investigation
Division agents, fixed-wing
and helicopter aviation assets
and the DPS Communications

merous FBI and Bureau of

ride, skate, play baseball, play bridge
and had many friends," Mrs. Watson
said. Bess Wallace and Harry Truman
were married June 28,1919, just 18
years after she graduated from high
school.
Harry entered politics in 1922 when
he won a seat as judge of Jackson
County. Like most political wives of
that day, Mrs. Truman stayed in the
background and took no public part
in his campaigns. Behind the scene,
she acted as secretary, assistant
and helped write speeches. When
Harry was elected Vice-President in
1944, she was still unknown around
Washington D. C. despitethefactthat
Harry had served in Congress for 12
years and they lived there.
"Bess' deep desire for privacy
evolved out of her view that publicity
was undignified and unbecoming to a
lady," Mrs. Watson said.
Mrs. Truman appeared at ceremo-
nial events which could notbe avoided.
She occasionally christened planes
or ships, or appealed to people to
buy saving bonds, contribute to the
March of Dimes or the Girl Scouts.
She rarely issued public statements;
but in 1949 she announced that she
hoped Congress would repair the old
White House instead of constructing
an entirely new mansion.
"She was committed to helping
her husband behind the scenes.
Bess, nor Harry, concealed the fact
that their partnership extended to his
work. Herfamily connections in politics
had helped launch his career," Mrs.
Watson said.
I n 1944 when a reporter asked what
role she would have in Harry's cam-
paign for vice-president: Bess replied
thatshe would make no speeches, but
would help him write his speeches
"because we've done that so long,
it's a habit."
When it was revealed that Bess had
been on Harry's senate payroll, he
defended hiring her, "She's a clerk in
my office and does much of my clerical
work. I need her there and that's the
reason I'vegotherthere. I never make
a report or deliver a speech without
her editing it."
Bess spent considerable time
answering about 100 letters per day
from people around the country.
"Much of Bess' value lay in her
tempering influence on her husband
when his salty language and fiery
temper gothim into trouble. She would
reprimand him saying, 'You didn't have
to say that.' Harry repaid his wife with
frequent vows of devotion and swift
attacks on her critics," Mrs. Watson
continued.
After leaving the White House in
1953, she and Harry retired to Missouri
where they lived quietly in the old Gates
Mansion built by her grandfather. She
lived aquiet domestic life that remained
unchanged even after Harry's death
in 1972'
She rarely left Independence. She
died there in 1982 at the age of 97.
Always close to her parents, Marga-
ret, their only child, wrote biographies
of Harry and Bess Truman.
