United Way G
to protect farmland of the quality
found in Collin County.
Our prime prairie soils, stretch-
ing principally across the com belt
of the Midwest are quite special
lands. Their high levels of organic
matter content and inherent fertility
make them more dependable during
periods of drought and versatile
enough to grow almost anything.
While the United States is indeed a
big place with a large stock of open
land, there is precious little truly
prime farmland and virtually none in
reserve to replace that which is
paved over.
As the theme of my local work-
shops points out — open space
pays. In the same way an economic
development program courts other
industry and commerce, the founda-
tion of this most productive and
sustainable industry lies literally at
your doorsteps.
For less than the cost of one meal
at a fast-food restaurant, Collin
County families can act to preserve
agricultural resources which are
practically incomparable and truly
irreplaceable.
