Ice on Bridge Floor
Causes Two Accidents
Ice that had accumulated from
freezing mist on the floor of the
Red river bridge on highway 77,
north of Gainesville, caused two
traffic accidents Monday morn-
ing.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Lanier of
Shawnee, Oklahoma, were en
route to their home, following a
honeymoon trip in West Texas.
As their new automobile struck
the glazed surface of the bridge,
it was skidded into the steel
causing_ damage estimated at
$450. Mr. and Mrs. Lanier es-
caped injury.
A short time later, Ray Beard
and family of Ardmore, Okla.,
pulling a house trailer behind
their automobile, arrived at the
bridge. Observing the Lanier
car just ahead of him, Beard ap-
plied his brake but was unable to
stop. His car and trailer stopped
crosswise of the bridge so as to
block other traffic.
A wrecker called from Gaines-
ville, and the local highway pa-
trolmen, went to the scene. In
order to move the Beard car and
trailer, it was necessary to chain
the wrecker to the bridge rail-
ing.
A highway department crew
from Gainesville went to the
bridge and scattered sand on the
surface, enabling other cars to
cross in comparative safety.
Warmer weather later in the day,
eliminated the ice coating.
when Izvestia published a letter
from his secretary, Cecelia Nel-
son of Michigan, accusing him of
spying;
The letter said Magidoff, cor-
respondent for NBC, Exchange
Telegraph and McGraw-Hill Pub-
lishing company, had received
instrntions from McGraw-Hill
to collect certain information on
unaerground construction. Mc-
Graw-Hill explained that the
charges were based on “routine
news assignments” sent to Magi-
doff.
