Panthers Victorious
Coach Horace McCain’s cohorts came through with flying colors
again last night to take their sixth win of the season. By the way, it
was their sixth straight win of the current football year. The
Panthers lost their first game, tied their second outing and lost
their third try. Since then, they , have evidently found themselves,
for they have really rolled past the opposition.
In chalking up their record of six wins, two losses and a tie, the
locals have scored 108 points to a combined total of 57 for their
opponents. The Black Cats also came in second in the junior high
school conference this season.
In the game last night, the improving Panthers could probably
have scored more on the Whitesboro team had Coach McCain decided
to leave his first string in the entire game.

them 33 to 0; Sanger turned the

6; Lewisville beat them 41 to 0;
Bridgeport blasted them 46 to 0;
and last week the Saint Jo high
school trampled them 58 to 0.
That is a total of 20 points
scored by the Hornets to a tre-
mendous total of 382 scored by
their opponents.
Coach A. E. Barnes is slated to
send his team of regulars, led by
brilliant Eugene Kuntz, into the
fray in Era.
Billy Mack Calhoun and Carl
Hott are due to start at the end
positons, with Weldon Davis and
Roy Comer at the tackle spots
and Yuon Harris and Garner
Barnes at the guard slots. Billy
Earl McCollum will probably be
ready to go in his center place.
In the backfield, Eugene
Kuntz will lead the aggregation
from his quarterback position,
while Truman Wilkerson and
Royce Cooley run from the half-
back spots. Big Lloyd Martin is
due to start at his fullback posi-
tion.
For Coach C. M. Estes’ Era Hor-
nets, Paul Lucas and Carl Wilker-
son will start at ends and Jimmy
Christian and Hulen Scott are due
to answer the opening whistle
from their tackle spots. Joe
Samek and Thomas Hunter will
probably get the nod for the
guard posts and D. E. Sherrill is
due to center the ball for the
Estes crew.
Carl Henderson, star Hornet
quarterback, received a knee in-
jury in the game with Saint Jo
last week, and will be unable to
play, so Donald Gregory will be
shifted from a halfback position
to the quarterback slot.
Carl King will run from his
halfback spot as usual, with
Bobby Joe Berry taking over the
other wingback position.
Maurice Scott is another Hor-
net casualty. He received a slight
brain concussion in the contest
with Saint Jo, so he will be out
blast from the tackle posts. Glen

Several football boys turned

entering the fights.
We feel sure that the club will
want to sponsor a regular Gaines-

this year. Last year they didn’t
enter anyone in the Golden
Gloves, but they did stage several
matches with fighters coming
from other cities. We believe that
sports fans in Gainesville enjoyed
the fights very much, for some of
the boys staged some good bouts.
Maybe they will really go to town
with the sport here this winter.

Whitesboro had received the
kickoff. Crockett tried to pass
again, but he was thrown for a
six yard loss. He tried again and
was nailed for a four yard deficit,
pushing the ball back to his own
one yard line. Billy Fairchild
tried to kick out for the visitors,
but the ball skidded out of
bounds on his own 16 yard line.
Scott Clark tried to pass for
the touchdown, but on first down
he was unable to get the ball
away and lost four yards. The
very next play he backpedaled
again and heaved a long one in
the vicinity of Roddy Osborne.
The little quarterback slapped
the ball with one hand and
gathered it in for a touchdown.
Clark kicked the extra point to
make it 29 to 0.
Whitesboro was destined to
have one counter, and after they
received the next kickoff they
marched for their lone tally.
Crockett passed to Fairchild for
26 yards down to the Panther 23
to set up the score. He then
hoofed the ball himself, and made
it down to the nine yard line,
from where Dan Burleson shot

scooted his way for 50 yards and

Roddv Osborne tried for the ex-
tra point, but failed and the score
was 6 to 0 in favor of the local
Felines.
Almon kicked off again for the
Panthers and Whitesboro took
possession on their own 34. Rob-
ert Crockett tried three passes on
three downs, but on each occasion
the rushing Panthers threw the
elongated passer for a loss be-
fore he could let go with a pass.
He lost 17 yards in those three
downs. On fourth down Jerry
Riley tried to punt for the little
Bearcats, but the Whitesboro line
failed to hold the eager Gaines-
ville gridders out and Lloyd King
blocked the punt just as Riley
put his toe into the ball. Scott
Clark raced down and recovered
the loose pigskin on the Whites-
boro five yard line.
On the first play the panthers
drew a five yard penalty for off-
sides but they didn’t seem to
mind at all, as Ralph Yeakley
promptly took a handoff and gal-
loped off tackle for the 10 yards
and another Gainesville score. Al-
mon kicked the extra point to
make the score 13 to 0 in favor
of the Panthers.
With Marcus Almon delivering
the mail, the Panthers threatened
again late in the second period.
Almon raced for 41 yards on one
play to take the pigskin to the
visitors’ eight yard line. A penal-

and Whitesboro took over on
their own one.

The winless Hornets will gath-

game in this 1949 grid season.
Valley View on the other hand
will be trying for their third win
of the current season.
The contest will be the last of
the year for both of the
District 13-B teams. Valley View
of Iowa Park is the undisputed
champion of the district and last
week they barely edged the
Eagles 27 to 20.
The Eagles have beaten Bovd 7
to 6 and Sanger 19 to 7, but they
lost to six opponents. Alvord out-
scored them 20 to 12; Bryson also
raced across the goal line one
more time to take a 32 to 26 scor-

swamped them 25 to 0; Bridge-

Saint Jo bested them 26 to 7; and
Iowa Park outscored them 27 to
