Swanson, a rancher, farmer and
businessman, came to Erath County 17
years ago He ranches and farms in the
Hannibal community, and has been in
the motel, restaurant and grocery
business.
He is presently involved in invest-
ments in Stephenville and the surround-
■ ing area.
He and his wife, Mable, have four
grown children, D.T. Swanson of
Normal, Ill., D.L. Swanson of Corpus
Christi, Mrs. Bobbie Virden of Highrolls,
N.M., and Mrs. Gloria Attix of Lincoln,
Dele., and 15 grandchildren
“I feel that my fanning, ranching and
business backgrounds will be very
helpful in representing the people in the
district. Most of us in this area have
either business or agriculture back-
grounds, and we all know what is best
for our state. I am sure that the people
of the district I have talked with agree
that I can well represent the thinking of
the district,” Swanson said.
In Old Testament times
God helped the armies of
Israel fight wars against their
enemies. (Psalm 144:1,2)
Even then, warfare was not
really approved by God (I
Chron. 28:3); but Israel had
to fight to survive, because
through Israel the Christ was
to come.
In the New Testament we
find an entirely different kind
of warfare. War is not an ap-
proved means of establishing
the kingdom of God, as it was
the kingdom of Israel. Now
God no longer has a chosen
nation that He fights for, be-
cause His cause is no longer
national, but international.
Now God’s warfare is no lon-
ger between nations, but be- ।
tween individual Christians
and the forces of spiritual
evil.
The kingdom of God can-
not be spread by military
force. Jesus told Pilate, "If
my kingdom were of this
world, my servants would
fight." (John 18:36- a con-
trary to fact condition— i t
isn’t, so they do not.) When
Peter tried to fight for Jesus,
Jesus told him, "Put your
sword back into its place;
for all who take the sword
will perish by the sword."
(Matt. 26:52)
The Christian’s warfare
is spiritual, not physical.
Paul wrote in Ephesians 6:12,'
"We are not contending a-
gainst flesh and blood, . . .
but against the spiritual hosts
of wickedness.” Next week
we will explore how Paul
wrote about Christian living
in terns of "fighting the good
fight of the faith.”. (I Tim.
