By Keith Peck
About two thousand years ago Caesar Augustus. Emperor of the
Roman Empire issued a decree that all the world should be taxed. He was
prohably has mg trouble balancing the budget. Mary and Joseph, who were
descendents of King David. went from Nazareth to Bethlehem to pay their
tax and to be counted. While in Bethlehem, Mary gave birth to a boy
who eventually gave his life that all mankind might have eternal life. He
was named Jesus.
Jesus supported taxes On one occasion He told the Pharisees "to
render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's and unto God the things that
are God's.* At another time when His own taxes were due. He sent the
disciples fishing. In the mouth of one of the fish, the disciples found a
silver coin. Jesus said, 'take it and pay our taxes."
Taxes are a lot like the weather. Everyone talks about them, but no
one does anything. I suppose taxes are a fact of life but I can't help but
wonder about some ot the collecting agency's tactics. Did you know that
the IRS has an official historian, or I should say had an official historian.
She was Shelley Dav is and she quit her job this past week. The reason she
gave was that the IRS has problems putting its past in order, so after seven
years on the job the IRS' first historian is quitting in protest.
The IRS is pretty inflexible when it comes to insisting that we keep
reams ot records about our activities but the same rules do not apply to
them They either dump their records in the basement, desk drawers or
they shred them. If the records cannot be located, they can never be
successfully challenged. This is an excuse they would never accept from a
taxpayer.
Since Ms. Davis has gone public with her charges about their sloppy
methods, guess what? The IRS is investigating her. Two points I would
like to make. First, does the IRS really need a historian? Since she quit,
abolish the job and save her salary. Second, should we tax payers have to
pay for such an mane activity as an investigation?
Anyway, have a Happy Holidays Season!
