The Rusk Camp W.O. W, un-
veiled the monument to Ed. S.
Townsend Sunday afternoon at
the cemetery. The ceremonies
were nicely carried out, and
were very interesting and im-
pressive. The address by Sov-
ereign Chas. Emanual is deserv-
ing of special mention. In a
clear cut, masterly way he por-
trayed the merits of the order,
and in elegant phraseology paid
a beautiful tribute to the dead,
abundance on the streams. 832

Ex-Gov. Jas. S. Hogg came in
Monday and spent the day in
Rusk. What his visit meant is
merely a conjecture, but rumor
has it that a big deal is on hand,
and that he is negotiating for
the sale of the New Birmingham
Iron Furnace.

Messers. J. W. Francis, Wade
Neeley and Sam Freeman left
Wednesday evening for ‘the
Beaumont oil fields. These gen-
tleman, and others whom they
represent, have purchased 508
acres near Beaumont, , and will
probably charter a stock com-
pany and drill for oil on their land
immediately.
County Court opened the sec-
ond week of the present term
Monday. In the absence of
Judge Box Hon. L. D. Guinn was
elected special judge, and excus-
ed the jury until Friday the 26th.
Th case of J. W. Dear vs. The
Tyler Southeastern Railroad was
trkeu up Wednesday, and a spe-
cial jury summoned, which is
now being tried.
Last Monday being San Jacin-
to Day, the faculty of the public
school gave the children holiday
and a picnic at Dickinson’s fish
pond, under the direction of the
teachers. Everything passed
off pleasantly and the children
enjoyed the day immensely.

Rusk has a well regulated pub-
licschool, of which the patrons
should feel proud.
