The outstanding record compiled by the Gainesville Fire depart-

Baseball fans who attend the
Big State league games at Locke
field in Gainesville next week
while the Cooke County Fair is
in progress, will be admitted to
the grounds for 10 cents in addi-
tion to the price of the baseball
tickets.
This decision was reached at
a meeting of the board of direc-
tors of the Fair association held
Thursday evening at the Cham-
ber of Commerce.
Tickets to the ball game will
be sold at the admission gates
to the fair grounds, and the 10c
fair admission tickets will be
sold to the baseball fans at the
same time.
Those who do not buy base-
ball tickets at the gates will be
required to pay the regular ad-
mission price to the grounds.
If they decide to go to the ball
game after entering the grounds
they may buy tickets at the box
office in the ball park at the
regular price.

Social Security
Payments $8,141
Monthly in County
The first year of operations un-
der the revised social security act
brought many changes in the
work of the Dallas field office of
the Social Security administra-
tion. It has also meant a great
deal to the people of Cooke coun-
ty in terms of dollars and cents,
according to Z. E. Avery, man-
ager of the office.
As of February 28, 1951, 287
persons were receiving each
month $8,141 in old-age and sur-
vivors insurance in Cooke county.
Avery pointed out that many
persons in Cooke county were
eligible for monthly old-age and
survivors insurance who are los-
ing payments because they have
not filed application.
Travis C. Briggs, field repre-
sentative, will be at the Post Of-
fice in Gainesville from 9:30 a.m.
to noon on September 4 and 18
for the purpose of assisting eligi-
ble persons in filing application
for the federal insurance to which
they may now be entitled. Every
person age 65 and over in Cooke
county who has a social security
number and who is not earning
more than $50 a month in a job
covered by social security and the
survivors of wage earners who
have died should visit Mr. Briggs
and secure assistance in filing ap-
plication for benefits, Avery
stated.
Pioneers Tie
Sherman-Denison
For Fourth Place
By The Associated Press
Austin finally caught up with
Sherman-Denison in the Big
State league. Temple is still chas-
ing pace-setting Gainesville.
The Pioneers blanked Sher-
man-Denison, 6-0, last night and
went into a fourth place tie with
the Twins.
Temple used Fred Bell’s
tenth inning home run to lick
Texarkana, 5-4, Gainesville
walloped Waco, 14-3, to stay a
game ahead of the Eagles. Wi-
chita Falls beat Tyler, 8-6.
Frank Hill blanked Sherman-
Denison on one hit, a single by
Tony Estrada in the sixth.
Austin manager Tom Jordan
protested his game in the second
inning. Bill Ankoviak collided
with plate umpire Zaetz ten
yards from home plate and was
tagged out.
A home run by Bob Jenkins in
the eighth insured Wichita Falls’
victory.

It’s a Dog-Fight
in Texas Loop Race
By WILBUR MARTIN
Three teams are going to round
out the Texas league playoff
bracket, but you can’t begin. to
figure how they’re going to line
up behind pennant winner Hous-
ton.
San Antonio, Dallas or Beau-
mont could finish second, third
or fourth, or out of the money.
Confusing? Nope, Fort Worth
still has a chance to get in the
playloff and there’s just one
game that separates second
place San Antonio from fourth
place Beaumont.
Dallas edged within a half-
game of second last night by
bumping Oklahoma City, 5-4.
San Antonio knocked off
Shreveport, 9-4; Beaumont
blanked Houston 11-0, and Fort
Worth stayed within two and one
half games of the first division on
a 10-2 decision over Tulsa.
