was wearing a scar over his left
eye today, the only remaining evi-

him by three or four men while he
was attending a charity benefi at
a place near Great Neck, L. I.
In a written statement which he
gave out last night following pub-
lication in New York of a report
that he had been punched while
a gust at a fashionable Long Le-
land spot, last Saturday night, the
senator said he had been repeated-
ly threatened and warned that he
might be attacked at any time.
He raid he did not know his as-
sailants but that he had been try-

persons who did the ganging."

GAME BY A EUSE
If a player opens the duction and
later doubles au acversarys con-
tract. partner is entiled to believe
that the opener has absolutely cer-
tain tricks especially when the con-
tract is at no trump.
Failure on the part of opener’s
partner to appreciate the essentials
of an original bid enabled Dr. V. M
Myers of Brooklyn to run away with
a vulnerable game at no trump at
the Marine and Field club when he
could have been set 900 points.
He came up with an ace from an
acc-queen boding in dummy to con-
vey the impression to the opener's
partner that the opener held the
king of the suit. As a result the
«mt was led Coer and the Kry tor
romped home. Here was the hand:

police were investigating on the
strength of reports that the King-

the stories given by Christ concern-

their varied excuses, the wedding

‛ OLD FRIEND
Colin turned around. One of the
two men was beckoning to him Oh,
well, on? could watch Dollaire from
then as mei? as here and it would
not be politic lor Clarkie Lunn to re-
fuse an invitation from such a in as
Harry the Lynx •
Harry the Lynx was a crook of no
Bmail degree H?, Colin, did not know
just what the other's racket was. but
he had met the man many times In
varidus dives and hangouts when, as
Colin Hewitt, he had been out on his
nightly prowls after material—and.
subsequrntly, as Clarkie Lunn, he had
met the other frequently in the same
■
Colin rose to his feet -and stood
1----there for an instant as though rfv-
ited to the spot, the blood pound-
ing in sudden hammer blows at his
heart. The face of Harry the Lynx's
——companion had until now been hid-
den by the former’s back—but now
it stood out. alone, as thought it were
face in .all that crowded
It 'was the face of the man with
whom he had fought that night in
Reddy’s old room—the man in whose
pocket he had found the card with its
cryptic "W. P.‘ scrawled upon it--
the man he had left unconscious
there on the floor
He fought for composure, affect-
ing an air of nonchalance, as he
strolled over to the other table. There
was no question in his mind now but
that Dollaire's presence here was
known to the Mask He had hoped for
a break, hoped that he would be able
to “ticket” whoever might make a
move against Dollaire: but he had
not dared to hope for a wide-open
break like this
__Here was a man that, whether any
Z more were made agains Dollaire to-
night or not, he knew definitely was
one of the Mask’s trusted tools Was
Harry the Lynx another? Almost cer-
tainly! Otherwise he would not be at
the same table—watching Dollaire
------But if Dollaire was. say. to be put on
the spot here tonight by these two
andpossiby ct hen* why was Colin in-
vited to their table? He did not
know. But, whatever the reason, noth-
ing would have deterred him now
“Hello. Clarkie!” Harry the Lynx
greeted heartily. "Meet my friend Ben-
Try Malone Yot're never talking to
the wrong one when you’re talking
to Benny."
Coli extended his hand.
"Glad to know you,” said Benny
Malone cordially, as he pulled out a
_ chair “Bit down Harry was telling
-— me about you,
Colin sat dawn in the indicated
It placed him with his bark to the
entrance, and his bark to Dollaire--
but he was no longer interested in
b. watching Dollaire. His interest was
r centered now in Benny Malone and
' Harry the Lynx, th? two men between
whom he sat.
“Bure!" he said pleasantly ' Harry
and I have met up a lot. What’ll you
I have?"
“Mix!" Benny Malone laughed
strangely “There’s enough here to last
as long as we'll want it. I guess-
thers’s another glass for you Help
5 yourself Let's talk quick Harry
I ’ says you're from Boston, and that
■ you've pulled a few deals with Pana
Goyetete-and that you had to blow
- . cut of Beantown ‘cause the pussy-
5a loots were getting curious.”
