NEW YORK, Sept 29— up)—Two
baseball clubs tha were picked to
finish third this year in their re-
spective pennant races start the big-
money battle tomorrow in the first
All-New York World Series since
Babe Ruth and John McGraw ended
a spectacular three-year rivalry in
1923
On their way back to the top this
year by sharply cohtrasting but nev-
ertheless effective methods, the
Yankees and Giants not only upset
several barrels of baseball ' dope''
but hung up a flock of records
All signs point to baseballs most
prosperous season since pre-depres-
slon days being climaxed by smash-
ing all previous records for the size
of the players pool as well as for
total attendance and gate receipts.
The general expectation is that
it will take six games to reach a
devision, with Yankee power arrayed
against a Giant defense that lea-
lures the great Carl Hubell. A full
seven-game battle would send the
"gate" to $1,500,000, as compared
with the record of $1,207,864, set ten
years ago in seven games by the
Yankees and Cardinals.

As Coach Jack Sisco's Eagles set-
Ue down to another week of train-
ing camp activities in preparation
for their visit to Georgetown Sat-
urday. they and local tans will keep
a weathet eye open toward Com-
merce where Friday the curtain goea
up on the Lone star Conferences
1936 scramble
East Texas Lions, last year dead-
locked with the locals and the
Stephen F Austin Lumberjacks for
conference honors, are making a
formidable bid lor undivided pos-
session of the pennant this year
and this week-end nre the opening
gun. staying at home to the Lum-
berjacks
Last week Uiose two clubs were
the only conference members to
hang up victories. Both looked
smooth on the ground and in the
air, though they played on muddy
fields that made Judgments hazard-
out.
Both Dangerous Passers
East Texas, finding a slippery ball
made their dangerous pass attack
headed by Bill Defee virtually im-
possible. turned to the ground and
launched another potential all-con-
ference back. Montgomery- against
visiting St. Edwards griddeni Mont-
gomery sprinted and slid to three
touchdowns, and a 19 to 6 victory
over St. Edwards
Stephen Austin blanked old-time
rivals from Lon Morris Junior Col-
lege 12 to 9. They themselves .boast
probably the conference s No. 1 pass-
er. the lanky Mills, and the East
Texas-Stephen Austin clash Friday
night may develop into the season's
most brilliant exhibition of aerials
because of their Une play the East
Texans will go into the game rank-
ing favorites.
Eagles Unknown Quantity
The Eagles will get their first
fair test of strength, as they jour-
ney south favored over the South-
western University Pirates. Last
week the locals held the powerful
Southern Methodist eleven to a 6-0
count, but the game was played in
such conditions of mud and rain j
that the score meant Iittle in showy
ing comparative strength, and the
miry turf gave no chance for the
North Texans to test out their fast
backfield
Both other members of the Lone
Star are in action again this week-
end Southwest Texas’ Bobcats,
whose stock slid down precipitously
last week as they took a 44-0 shel-
lacking from Howard Payne, will
stay at home to Schreiner Institute
Sam Houston s Bearkats, who got a
39-6 drubbing from the Texas Ag-
gies. will go to Oklahoma to meet
