MODERN MERCHANDISING METHODS
Not so many years ago, the creed of ’let the buyer
beware" was behind most business dealings, and even
after buyers learned to rely on the reputations of
dealers for honesty and fairness, the interest of the
dealers in the products they sold ceased as soon as
the customer left the store. But a decided change
has occurred in the last decade or so that is indica-
tive of the trends to modern merchandising.
This trend is the increased interest on the part
at manufacturers. wholesalers and dealers to seeing
that the ultimate consumer gets fun satistaction out
of the use of a product, and uses it properly. That to
why so many concerns offer various free serviees for
the benefit of their customers. Department stores
hold free classes in knitting and sewing. Banks offer
free investment service and advice for their clients.

AH Ahis is a far cry from the days when the cus-
tomer was left to hia own ingenuity to leant the
use of a product purchased. Modem merchants have
lehrned that customer aatlsfaction means more sales,
and are willing to spend money on these free ser-
vices that really are investments in good will
A recent example of this trend to merchandising is
provided by the lumber industry. A few yean ago a
lumber dealer sold lumber to carpenters and con-
tactors, with little thought to the citizen who paid
the bills for the completed house. Now, hoavrer many
lumber dealers offer free advice to those planning
homes, so that the prospective home owner can bund
more intelligently and be better satisfied with what
he receives for his money But the service offered by
the lumber men goes farther back than customer
satistnetion, for they know that poorly built wooden
homes only widen the market for brick, Ule and
concrete houses.
A horse driven to a work-wagon of the etoy water-

theme southwest part at the city and running to

Then, the chain store tax might

MUSICIANS PROTEST CANNED MUSIC
Five thousand musicians of Hollywood and Los
Angeles are ready to join to a strike, if necessary, to
curtail the commercial use of transcriptions and rec-
ords. The union leaders declare that broadcasting
stations are building up vast libraries of "canned
music" and that thousands of musicians all over the
country face unemployment.
This is the old revolt of men against machines.
Teamsters used the same argument when trains out-
moded horse-drawn wagons. Typesetters protested
violently when mechanical typesetting machines took
over their jobs. And yet the net result is that far
more men are employed in rail transportation and
more are employed in the composing rooms of news-
papers than under the old systems which were put
into the discard by inventions.
The revolt of musicians against mechanical music
antedated the radio. Back in the days when the
phonograph was invented, musicians foresaw the
doom of their profession. The mechanical piano-
player that used rolls of perforated paper was another
threat to the bread and butter of musicians. Then
came the radio placing music to homes and sound
films that put music in the theaters. Not only have
th ees inventions made citizens music-conscious. but
it has given them an appreciation for good music
that is now available to practically the entire popu-
lation of the country, where a few decades ago the
opportunity to listen to good music was a rare and
expensive treat, available only to a comparatively
small percentage of the population.
Of course, if canned music were curtailed or ban-
ned, theoretically more musicians would have to be
employed. But the cost would be much greater than
would be profitable, and musicians would lose out.
The attitude of the musicians may be compared to
Old Dog Tray who lost his bone by barking at his
reflection to the water.

consequences.

AUSTIN, July 30—(—From
time to time to recent years, the
Texas capital has been called a fire
trap while some persons have said

was all but falling down
Most of these statements, some of
which have been supported by •re-
ports of engineers, have emanated
from members of the Legislature,
which at the last general session
approved a large appropriation to
make repairs.
One of the safe spots in the build-

lapse, is in the office of the Board
of Control, where about a year ago
a large area of plaster fell from
the celling clerks working directly
under the area say they have noth-
ing more to fear because there is
no more plaster to fall.
Persons who express alarm over
the amount of the deficit in the
state's general revenue fund, cur-
rently about $10,000,000, might con-
sider new figures made public by
the Comptroller Department.
Thai department lias estimated
the deficit at the end of this fis-
cal year Aug. 31, will be $10,913,000
and at the end of the next year
or Aug 31, 1938, It will total ap-
proximately $17,000,000.
The latter figure, of course, may
be changed if the Legislature, slated
to meet in special session late in
September, raises new revenue.
