it’s amazing how much the

women purchased two sets
of altar coverings with
memorial fund and cook
book monies. A family

County enrolled.
Fritz L. Nelius, County
Executive Director, said 141
farms are enrolled in the
acreage reduction program
and 177 in the 10-30 percent
payment-in-kind program.
“Program enrollment and
cropland acreage reductions
are favorable and impres-
sive!’ he said.
Faced with record-level
surplus crops and weak
demand, the U.S. Depart-
ment of Agriculture offered
a payment-in-kind program
to further reduce 1983 crops
of wheat, corn, grain
sorghum, upland cotton
and rice from the regular
acreage reduction program
and bring supplies more in
line with demand. The PIK
provides farmers with the
commodity normally grown
on the acreage they
withdraw from production
as payment for partici-
pating.
According to Nelius, the
base acreage enrolled in the
program includes 436 wheat
acres, 12,175 com/grain
sorghum acres, 3081 upland
cotton acres and 4434 rice
acres.
Provisions of the acreage
reduction program calls for
a combined 10 percent
acreage reduction and 10
percent paid land diversion
for feed grains, a combina-
tion 13 percent acreage
reduction and 3 percent
paid land diversion for
wheat and rice, and a 20
percent acreage reduction
with an optional 3 percent
paid diversion provision for
upland cotton.
Farmers participating in
the acreage reduction pro-
gram were also eligible to
participate in the payment-
in-kind program offering
an additional 10-30 percent
of their base acreage to
receive payments-in-kind.
For complying with the
acreage reduction and paid
land diversion programs,
fanners will be eligible for
program benefits such as
land diversion payments, •
