Community1 s love
touches family
Leslie Allens mother. Brenda Milstead, said the recent concert by
Perfect Stranger is just the latest in a senies of demonstrations of love
the local community has given to bet daughter since she first began
showing the symptoms of Batten s Disease.
Volunteer efforts to help the family have made all the difference
over the years
"Everyone loved her w hen we moved here,” Milstead said "They
wouldnt be able to love her so much now if they hadn't loved her
when she was seven."
At first doctors believed another disorder had affected Leslie's op
tic nerves, causing her to lose hot sight The girl and her family took
blindness in stride, teaming to cope with the disability Friends and
neighbors showed then love, Milstcad said, with then support and
concern.
But as the sears went by, the diagnosis changed as it became ap-
parent that other abilities were being affected by Leslie's illness.
Batten's is a progressive genetic disorder that causes the gradual loss
of the patient's neurological functions. This spring, Leslie began to
use a wheelchair, and she has difficulty with her memory
Church members, friends. and other members of the community
have reached out in many ways to the family, forming what one
friend called "Leslie's Love Line" to take her on outings, visit with
her, and provide support for her family.
When a wheelchair became a necessity. Milstead said, volunteers
came to the house to widen doorways and install a ramp to the back
yard. The family has so many offers of help that sometimes Milstead
feels she must refuse, asking friends to save their energies for a time
in the future when Leslie will need them even more.
The constant love has helped the family cope, Milstead said.
"It’s been a terrific support," she explained. Whenever things look
bad, a card or a note or a word from a friend will come. "Even
something that small is a help."
