THE autographed crutches
I have been awarded T. W.
Wrenn, claim agent of the Nor-
thern Texas Traction Co.
But he didn’t get them for
being on the wrong end of the
scores at a bridge party. They
represent the tribute of a man
who sued the firm for more
than 850,000 but decided later
to leave town.
The claimant charged he feH-
from a city trolley car and
broke his back. He stayed in
bed and walked on crutches to
prove it.
A month’s arduous investiga-
tion by Wrenn and other agents
disclosed that the claimant
whitewashed a fence, carried a
heavy ladder and did other
work while he was supposed to
be bedfast.
Then followed withdrawal of
the suit and presentation of the
• crutches to Wrenn, with this
autograph:
“To T. W. Wrenn, with my
compliments."

WASHINGTON, April 16. —
Charges that there were frauds
in obtaining leases to the rich
public oil - lands in the Salt
Creek, Wyoming field, and that
the leases were manipulated so
as to build up a monopoly in
that field, will form one of the
bases of the move by Senators
Norris and Nye to have the Sen-
• ate oil investigation extended to
Salt Creek, it was learned today.
The charges are not new. They
were made by R. C. Bell and A.
B. Bouton, U.S. Justice Depart-
ment 1 representatives in 1921,
when the Interior Department,
under the direction of John Bar-
ton Payne, was passing on the
Salt Creek leases.
Thugs and Gunmen.
They advised the Interior De- i
y partment that applications for;
0 leases of about half of the Salt
Kd Creek field were based on claims
