CAMP SWIFT
The. war department Monday had
filed declaration on taking on 14
different tracts in the Camp Swift
project with the federal district
clerk. The declaration covers
1,274.31 acres of the some 52,162
of the project. A check for $12,165
to pay for the land was deposited
with the clerk.
Title to this land is vested in the
United States upon signing of judge-
ment on the declaration of taking,
which will be signed by Judge W.
A. Keeling at a hearing. The act-
ion follows the condemnation suit
filed in the district court here on
Jan. 5.
The declaration, signed by Hen-
ry L. Stimson, secretary of war, set
forth the following owners of the
14 tracts and amount on each: Carl

A meeting of the County Defense
Recreation Council was held at the
County Court house in Bastrop
Saturday, March 21st. Mr. A. J.
Rankin, chairman of the County
Recreation Defense Council and Mrs
Chas J. Poth, County committee-
woman were present, as was the
entire staff of USO officials togeth-
er with Mr. H. E. Otis, Federal
Security agent and Mr. Emmy,
Regional Director for FSA on mak-
ing applications for Federal Build-
ings.

ed over for a visit.

Sam Houston, father and brother of
Mrs. Earl Caffey, were her week-

Mrs. E. Roy Jones returned Tues-
day from a week’s stay in Wharton
with Mrs. L. B. Huston. While
there she attended the opening of
the handsome Plaza Theatre, which
was formerly property owned by
Mrs. Jones’ father of that city. She
also had the pleasure of attending
the Federal Community Center
Opening Reception and Ball.

lovely pictures of Miss Geneva
Ashby of that city and make known

The Federal Security Agent stat-
ed that the present set-up as they
saw it called for 3 white centres
and 1 negro centre, to be built in
the towns as recommended by the
USO officials. Four towns were
considered, Austin, Bastrop, Elgin
and Smithville. However, Smith-
ville did not request a recreation
Centre as they have a hall'adequate
to take care of their needs.
The Elgin Committee made two
requests, one for a white centre
and aid for our negroes.

The Woman’s Missionary Society
of the Methodist Church is still tak-
ing orders for flowers. When in need
of any call any of the following com-
mittee : Mesdames W. H. Rivers, Dale
Willson, W. E. Wood; E. H. Danklefs,
and W. M. Griffin. Please note the
bus schedule and order your flowers
accordingly: 6:44 a. m. 11:14 a. m.

singing “When We All Get To-
gether” and other pep songs.
Miss Neva Lynn Snowden gave a
reading “The Deacon’s Master-
piece” and an interesting action dia-
log, “The Family Pet” was given by
Lura Faye Snowden and Lucille
Purcell. Mrs. Owens Carter played
two beautiful violin solos, accompa-
nied by Mrs. Hardy Frost and a
special feature was a vocal solo,
“Blessed Assurance” by petite Icia
Belle Wolfe, the sweetheart of the
W. C.
