NEW FM ROAD
TO SERVE
NEW SWEDEN
A new farm-to-market road in
Travis County will soon serve
New Sweden community. Buyers
representing Travis County are
now purchasing the right-of-way
for this new road to be built by
the State Highway Department
from a point on State Highway 20
just east of Manor, a distance of
'4.7 miles to the New Sweden com-
munity, following the location of
the Manor-Rices Crossing Road.
The, cost of the construction as
estimated by the highway depart-
ment will be some $35,300. About
thirteen acres will be purchased
from fifteen property owners for
the new FM road.

The weather plays tricks on every
one. Cold a short time and then
Spring weather. Turkeys are lay-
ing.
Mrs. Jim Shaw reports she has
quite a few turkeys laying.
Mr. Frank Creel had to report
for petit juror service today
(Monday.)
Mr. Martin Wolf Jr. also was
called" to juror service Monday.
Mr. and -Mrs. Martin Kastner
and Mr. and Mrs. Munson were
in the Mt. Pleasant community
Sunday looking after his cattle
here.
Mr.and Mrs. Leroy Creel and
Mike of Bastrop visited in the
Frank Creel home Sunday night.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown
and son visited, in the, August
Brown home Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Latis Jackson and
family of Austin and Mr. and
Mrs. Jesse Mills and son visited
in the Gordon Wolf home Sun-
day.
Mr. Josh Browning returned to
Waco Sunday to help Mr. and
Mrs. Leslie Dungan enjoy their
new house, which was completed
and they moved in last week.
So sorry to hear Miss Myrtle
Walker is so ill. Miss Myrtle is
one of our prominent citizens,
vzho had moved to Austin some
months ago.
Messrs Ambrose, and Joel Hack-
worth were out of the community
visitors Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Browning
were recent visitors in the Frank
Creel home.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Browning
attended the surprise birthday
dinner in honor of Mrs. John
Browning’s birthday at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Brown-
ing, Sunday January 22. This
community wishes our auntie
many more birthdays.
Mr. Pont Creel is doing o. k.
after a good case of mumps.
Mr. Henry Taylor of McDade
visited in the Frank Creel home
last week.
This community extends their
sympathy to Mrs’. Gordon Wolf
whose niece was one of the wreck
victims, Miss Lillian Alford of
McDade.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Shaw and Mr.
Noah Shaw visited in the Carl
Shaw home one afternoon last
week.
McDADE PTA MEETS
The McDade PTA met in a
postponed regular meeting Fri-
day, Jan. 20 at 2:30 p. m. Nine
members were present. President,
Mrs. A. Eschberger, resigned and
vice-president, Mrs. A. Y. Field
became president. Mrs. Carl Shaw
was elected vice-president and
Mrs. Frank Carroll reporter.
Old and new business was at-
tended then a motion for adjourn-
ment was made.
The next regular meeting will
be held the second Friday in Feb-
ruary. Everyone is encouraged to
attend. This PTA stands firmly
behind the future of McDade.

CHRISTIAN ENDEAVORS
ENTERTAIN WITH WIENER
ROAST MONDAY
The Christian Endeavors en-
deavors entertained their friends
last Mon. evening with a hayless
ride and a wiener roast. After the
while Sunday night with Mrs.
Beulah Smith and Miss Bettie
Harrison.
Mr. and Mrs. Ira Jackson and
Judy Jackson visited in the A. L.
Turnipseed home Sunday after-
noon.
Sorry to hear Mr. Kyle Young
of Bryan had the misfortune to
get his neck broken in a car
wreck one night last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wolf and
son, Martin, Jr. were visitors in
the Frank Creel and Albert Roth-
er home Sunday afternoon.
We welcome the new families
to our community.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Creel vis-
ited the Morgan Chapel Cemetery
Sunday where the writer’s grand-
parents and sister are buried.
Mr. Vernon Harrison has done
some work on our road toward
McDade. Thanks Vernon, keep
the good work up.
Have "oil talk” around here,
but never count an oil well until
it is a flowing well.
AUXILIARY ENTERTAINED
IN A. J. RANKIN HOME
The Woman’s Auxiliary 'of the
American Legion, Henry A. Lund-
gren Post 295, met Tuesday night
January 17th at the home of Mrs
A. J. Rankin with Mrs. Andrew
Blackstock, Mrs. George Loftus
and Mrs. Eugene Ward as joint
hostesses.
The business meeting was pre-
1 sided over by Mrs. Jack Webb.
: The program consisted of a
movie on “Child Welfare” and
games and contests.
Refreshments of sandwiches,
cookies, coffee and tea were serv-
ed to the following.

LEGION AND AUXILIARY
HOLD JOINT MEETING
The Ladies Auxiliary of Hen-
ry A. Lundgren Post 295 met with
the Legion members in their
regular meeting on Tuesday night
at 7:30 in the new Legion hall,
with 33 present.
After the business session tables
were set up for canasta, 42 and
dominoes and everyone entered
enthusiastically into a series of
spirited games. The group sang
the National Anthem with Mrs.
Will D. Nichols playing piano ac-
companiment. An atmosphere of
delightful fellowship prevailed
ELM GROVE

I failed to get last week’s news
in on time, so I will mix up . the
two weeks and maybe have it in
on time.
Our community sympathizes
with those who lost their loved
ones in the wreck on the McDade
- Elgin Highway. Our hearts were
with you in your hours of sorrow;
we hope Mrs; Taylor will be bet-
ter soon.
Our sick folks are reported bet-
ter. Mrs. W. N. Clark is getting
along nicely. Mr. and Mrs. A. C.
Browning paid her a visit at Aus-
tin yesterday.
Last week Mr. and Mrs. A. C.
Browning had for week-end visit-
ors Mr. and Mrs. Glen Browning,
Mr. and Mrs. William Mercer of
San Antonio and Mr .and Mrs. C.
Sherman and Mr. and Mrs. J.
Weaver and son.
Visitors at the A. L. Turnipseed
home have been Mr. and Mrs.
Horace Barnett and daughter, of
Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Tur-
nipseed and family, Mr. and Mrs
Harold Turnipseed and son, of
Houston, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Jack-
son, of Blue, Mr. and Mrs. Grady
Edwards and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Vernon Sherman and fam-
ily of Austin.
Mrs John Browning has return-
ed to Austin.
Mr. and Mrs. A. Cornell were
Austin visitors.

Eighteen members of the Trav-
is-Bastrop Bi-County Council of
the Parent Teacher Association
met in the auditorium of Elgin
High School Tuesday, January
24th with Elgin PTA as host. Re-
presentatives from Pecan Springs
and Manchaca, of Travis County,
and Elgin, of Bastrop County
were present. Elgin is the only
school of this county that is a
member of the organiation.
Mrs. Bill Frost’s section of the
sixth grade gave a very entertain-
ing program directed by Mrs.
Frost and Mr. J. Ray Davis. Mr.
C. E. Brown, gave the welcome
address, after’ which a business
session was held with Mr. Erwin
IStark of Machaca, presiding. A
nominating committee was elect-
ed with Mrs. Joe Wheless of Pe-
can Springs as chairman. She
named the following members on
her committee: Mesdames Louis
Lundgren, Elgin; C. H. Gustaf-
son, Pecan Springs; J. R. Jones
and Jacob Bauerle of Manchaca.
The president of all local units re-
ported on work done within
their unit.
The Homemaking Department
of Elgin High School. under the
leaderhip of Mrs. Bergquist serv-
ed a delicious luncheon of Wal-
dorf salad, meat loaf, potato
chips, Spanish hominy,. peaches,
cookies and coffee. The tables
were attractively laid with cen-
terpieces of Japonica. The room
was also decorated with arrange-
ments of Japonica placed at van-
tage points.
Mrs. Lewis Lundgren of Elgin
is the newly elected president for
1950 - 51.
In the afternoon group pictures
were taken by Albert Paul Rich-
ter. The meeting adjourned at a-
bout 2:30 o’clock following an
interesting and enjoyable day.

R. L. Brown attended the birth-
day dinner given in honor of Mr.
Cecil Kastner last Sunday at his
home in Austin.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Creel re-
ceived a card announcing the ar-
rival of a new son to stay with
Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Cullar at their
home in Corpus Christi. Mrs. Cul-
lar was Miss Edith Creel before
her marriage. The young man was
nemed Adolph Maise III.
Mrs. Alfred Kastner and moth-
er, Mrs. R. L. Brown were in
Austin last Tuesday.
