YES, THERE ARE SNAKES in the city. Sterling Hen-
dricks came by the Elgin Courier with a rat or chicken
snake he ran over in the HEB parking lot last Tues-
day. He said residents should be aware there are
snakes in the city, whether poisonous or not.
CHRIS RYBAK is the energetic accordionist who will

On May 25, Bastrop
County suffered its sec-
ond major disaster in
less than four years
after 6.50 inches of
rain fell in a very short
time on already satu-
rated soil, causing ex-
tensive damage due to
flooding to more than
350 homes and several
businesses.
Bastrop County re-
ceived a Federal Disas-
ter Declaration on
June 6 which will open
the door to individual
assistance for home-
owners.
The majority of these
homes were not lo-
cated in the flood plain
and did not have flood
insurance.
Regular homeowner’s
insurance does not
cover any damage
caused by rising water.
A number of homes
affected had just been
rebuilt following the
most destructive wild-
fire in Texas history in
which more than 1,700
homes were destroyed
in Bastrop County.
In addition, Bastrop
County had two con-
firmed F1 tornado
touch downs, which
damaged 16 homes, de-
stroyed two homes and
one business.
There were a total of
51 high water rescues.
The Bastrop County
Long Term Recovery
(BCLTRT) responded
to the disaster begin-
ning immediately.
At the request of
County Judge Paul
Pape and the Emer-
gency Management Co-
ordinator Mike Fisher,
members of BCLTRT
activated and provided
temporary shelter, food
and clothing to those
that were displaced by

the floods and torna-
dos and BCLTRT con-
tinues to do so today.
BCLTRT has contin-
ued to provide assis-
tance to Bastrop County
homeowners affected
by this disaster by coor-
dinating volunteers
doing cleanup work on
the damaged homes.
To date, BCLTRT has
coordinated more than
338 volunteers to do
cleanup work on ap-
proximately 120 prop-
erties for a total of
2,038 volunteer hours,
which will serve as a
credit to Bastrop
County’s share of the
costs payable to FEMA.
BCLTRT has already
been in personal con-
tact with more than
200 homeowners who
have suffered damage
to their homes to make
sure that any assis-
tance the Team could
provide was given.
However, funds with
which to assist the af-
fected homeowners are
rapidly running out
and donations are des-
perately needed.
County Judge Paul
—im
T 13
s-
Pape has designated
BCLTRT as the official
organization where do-
nations should be
made to provide relief
and recovery assis-
tance in Bastrop
County.
Donations can be
made online at
www.bcltrt.org or may
be mailed to BCLTRT,
P.O. Box 1975, Bastrop,
Texas, 78602.
Those needing assis-
tance in Bastrop
County can contact the
BCLTRT at 512-521-
3001 or stop by the
BCLTRT office located
at 1106 College Street,
Suite E-8, Bastrop,
Texas, 78602.
BCLTRT is still in
need of volunteers for
cleanup.
In addition, BCLTRT
requests that anyone
with heavy equipment
to make repairs to
gravel driveways con-
tact them as many have
been washed out and
are barely passable.
For more information,
contact Christine Files,
president, at 512-332-
6837.
