Bonnie Groves is one
happy lady these days.
She had a successful
Go Fund Me campaign
and a donation from a
private source, both of
which were enough to
get her upstairs porch
repaired.
Groves contacted the
Elgin Courier in the
middle of May after
getting bids to repair
the sagging porch that
were more than she
could afford. She set up
the GoFundMe.com ac-
count and starting get-
ting funding.
“I tried for grant
money, too, but the
house was worth too
much to be eligible for
the grant,” said Groves.
Once she had some
funding, she contacted
local builder Ben Gon-
zales, who agreed to re-
pair the porch for the
funding she had.
“It was really, really a
lot less than the bid,”
said Groves. “I called
the carpenter and he
said he would start to-
morrow. He came out
with two young men on
July 3 and on July 5 at 5
p.m., he was done. He
also power washed and
painted the front of the
house for me,” she said.
Gonzales replaced rot-
ted wood on the porch
with treated wood and
added more treated
wood to the column
foundation to level the
porch.
Bids on the repair
went from a little less
than $10,000 to
$26,000.
She also had trouble
