Adams, and tourna-
ment champions David
Schade and Fast Eddie
Rigney were all pres-
ent for competition the
final weekend.
“We hope to bring
a day of escape, joy
and family fun to our
patrons,” said Appling,
and if growth in the
number of visitors to
the faire is any mea-
sure of its success, it is
safe to say they have
attained their goal.
Sherwood Forest
Faire will return to
the area next spring
for its eighth season,
but for younger fans
of the renaissance
world who don’t want
to wait until next year,
Sherwood Forest Faire
is offering a summer
camp experience. For

Sherwood Forest
Faire closed out its
seventh spring season
near McDade, granting
renaissance revelers
and faire-goers food,
fun and entertainment
for the past eight
weekends. But beyond
a good time for pa-
trons, Sherwood Forest
Faire helped bring rev-
enue to the area.
The faire brought an
estimated 90,000 visi-
tors to the Elgin area,
for its 17-day season,
up from 78,000 from
last years numbers,
which helps the com-
munity at large.
“Whilst we haven’t
quantified the impact,
we believe it to be
very significant. I’m
told the hotels are all
full. Faire participants
and patrons are visit-
ing stores, restaurants,
gas stations and more
in McDade and Elgin,”
said George Appling,
Sherwood Forest Faire
co-founder.
But the faire is by
no means all business.
The event tries to
bring in renaissance
faire regulars as well
as families and others
just looking for a day
of fun. The faire fea-
tured entertainment
from musicians and
fire-eaters to world-
class jousting.
“I visit all the time,”
said Thomas Wood,
a veteran performer
of his blended show
of fire-eating, com-
edy and fire-juggling.

circuit, this was the
first year that Wood
was featured at Sher-
wood Forest Faire,
and he hopes to return
next year.
“It was a good time.
I had some success
with the crowds, and I
definitely had a good
time,” said Wood. “I
can do my show with-
out having to hold
back. With corporate
gigs, there’s not nearly
as much artistic free-
dom.”
The faire also of-
fered up a variety of
dining opportunities
from turkey legs and
fries to chai latte and
funnel cakes. Crafts-
man also exhibited an
assortment of wares in
the merchant booths
that peppered the fair-
grounds. Handmade
