40 YEARS EXPERIENCEGN
"TasumMiAsb)
came out of the store hollering
at us, grabbed us by the back
of the straps, and yanked us to
our feet. She then marched us
down the street to our house
(we lived about a block from
the store). The sandy road was
hot on our feet, but she didn’t
let up for a minute; she never
stopped hollering at us the
whole way.
When we got to the house,
she marched us to the bath-
room, leaned us over the
bathtub, gave each of us a bar
of Lifebuoy soap and told us
to eat it. We were foaming
at the mouths like mad dogs.
She kept yelling at us, “Chew!
Chew that soap!” and then
took a strap to us while we
were eating the soap.
We finally thought it was
over, but that wasn’t it. She
took us to the kitchen and sat
us down at the table, then she
reached in the cupboard and
took out a brown bottle. We
knew what it was—Syrup of
Pepsin (a laxative)—it tasted
terrible! She made both of us
drink a full tablespoon of that
awful stuff, lecturing us non-
stop on the evils of smoking.
I guess she wanted to purge
us—inside and out. Well, it
worked! From that day on,
neither of us ever touched a
cigarette again. To this day, I
can’t stand to be around any-
one smoking. I’ll tell you, it
was a sure cure for smoking;
I guarantee you it worked.

WE’RE QUALITY PROFESSIONALS
The year was 1929. Joseph
O’Connor was about six years
old; his younger brother,
Charles, was five. As Joseph
recalls it, they “got into every-
thing together.”
One hot summer day (he
remembers it was July), he
and Charles were sitting on
the sidewalk in front of their
father’s furniture store, dan-
gling their feet over the porch,
looking for “something to get
into.” As he said, “kids back
then didn’t wear shoes in the
summer; the boys especially
went bare-footed and their
feet were tough as boots.”
With this setting, here’s how
the story unfolds as Joseph
clearly remembers it...
There was this fellow came
walking by the store. He was
smoking a cigarette and threw
it on the ground. Back then,
all the streets were dirt; there
weren’t any paved streets in
Elgin. Anyway, the cigarette
was still long; it was barely
smoked. I grabbed the cig-
arette and my brother and I
took turns puffing on it.
My mother used to come to
the store every afternoon to
help with the bookkeeping.
She looked out the store front
window and saw us sitting
there smoking. We used to
wear blue and white cover-
alls with straps that fit over
the shoulders. Anyway, she
