After a couple of months
of discussion and public
feedback, the Elgin City
Council voted on new rules
to appoint citizens to city
boards and committees.
The discussion first
began at the January
4 city council meeting.
The council generally
appoints members to the
boards and committees
during the first meeting
of the year. These boards
include the Planning
& Zoning Commission,
Parks & Recreation Advi-
sory Board, Main Street
Board and more. At that
meeting, citizens brought
their concerns about the
membership on these
boards during the public
comment period, saying
that the same people are
always on the boards and
there isn’t enough oppor-
tunity for new people to
get involved. A total of
24 terms on all of those
boards expire this year,
and the city has received
46 applications for various
boards, which includes
people who have applied
for more than one board.
Of the 24 expiring terms,
22 board members have
asked to be reappointed.
During the January 4
meeting, the council sug-
gested asking the board
chairs about their board
members’ attendance
and participation, and
wanted to gather more
information before decid-
ing appointments at that
meeting.
