SOUND OF ’60s—Profile of a sonic boom is shown, in dia-
gram above. Flying at speeds of 1200 to 1400 m.p.h., mod-
ern Air Force planes trail a continuous cone of sound—up
to 50 miles wide—across the country. Because of the great
speed, air is piled up in front of a plane, creating a shock
wave. The wave trails the plane, lowering air pressure.
When air rushes back to normal, the noise occurs, much
. as thunder is caused by lightning. Structural damage from
jets above 35,000 feet is impossible, the Air Force says.

Beatuful lawns just don't
happen, but are the result o f
carefully made and carried out
plans. A fall application of a
complete fertilizer made 30 days
before the first expected frost Is
suggested as part. of the lawn
care program.
Such an application' will keep
grass green longer in the fall
and give it an earlier start next
spring. Too, when lawn grasses
go into the winter in a healthy,
vigorous condition, winter and
spring weeds have less chance
to grow and are less of a p r o-
blem.
It i s suggested that home-
owners use a fertilizer with a
2-1-1 or 1-1-1 ratio at a tate t o
supply two pounds of actual nit-
rogen for each 1000 square feet
of lawn. Twenty pounds of 10-5-5
or 1010-10 or 25 pounds of 8-8-8
will provide this amount of nit-
rogen.
After the fertilizer has been
applied, the lawn should be irri-
gated. If the soil is dry, apply
enough water to soak it to a
depth of six inches or better un-
til th moisture meets. If the soil
is wet, just wash the fertilizer
from the grass. Moisture i s
necessary for dissolving the fer-
tilizer and making it available
for use by the grass.
