Another theory, which gained
wide currency in the 19th Cen-

actually die on the cross, but only
fainted, and was resuscitated by
the coolness of the tomb. David

Fraud Theory
Finally there is what theologians
call ‘the/raud theory.” It sag
gests that the disciples invented
the story of the resurrection ahd
deliberately falsified a lot of de-
tailed evidence to support it.
To accept this explanation, as
Dr. John Sutherland, Bonnell has
pointed out, one has to believe
•hat “the apostles gladly became
martyrs in order to perpetuate, a
gigantic hoax.” And the question
raised centuries ago by the Ro-
man writer. Tertullian is still per-
tinent: Will men willingly die for
the sake of a story they know to
be false?
There remains, the possibility
that the disciples were, in sober
truth, the awe-stricken eyewitnes-
ses of the most stupendous event
in all history.
