The campus meetings arc due to

Committee’s overall plan. These
dates arc to be decided at the next

Regarding the purchase of a new

In observance of Veterans Day,
Scaly American Legion Auxiliary
unit presented its annual program
on the campus of Sealy Junior
High School at 8:30 a.m. Monday,
November 11. The program was
planned and directed by the unit
president Betty Luedecke.
A. G. Stuessel, junior high prin-
cipal, expressed his appreciation for
the yearly remembrance of Veterans
Day, and said “we’ll be looking
forward to next year."
Scaly 8th grade band, under the
direction of Don Allphin, opened
the early morning outdoor program
with “America,” setting the tone for
the occasion. For the raising of the
United States flag by Legion Post
members. Bill Hill and Harvel Za-
skoda, following the advancement
of the colors by Post and Unit
members, the band played the na-
tional anthem.
The invocation, message and
benediction were given by the Rev.
Cecil Lang of Brenham, who is
vacancy pastor at the First United
Presbyterian Church here.
The unit president addressed the
school assembly as an introduction
to the program. She also gave two
readings, one entitled “Memories”
and the World War I recollection,
"In Flaunders Fields," and the re-
sponse to it.
"Wars bring about a national sense
of togetherness that seems to come
by no other way. Something is
wrong and needs to be corrected,”
Rev. Lang said in his message on
the campus. Because of a bully and
a threat to peace it becomes our na-
tional duty to intervene. All U. S.
wars have had these characteristics
as starting points, he said.
Registration for the Scaly Youth Basketball program will be at B & T
Sports, 225 Fowlkes Street, from November 16th through December 4th.
Just drop your registration form and fee by the store during regular business
he urs. If you need a registration form, there will some at the store.
The program is for all boys and girls ages 8-12 (with age as January 1,
1992y through sixth grade only. There will be one division including both
boys and girls. Awards will be given to all participants at the end of the
At the beginning of his message,
the Rev. Lang called attention to a
dramatic fact: One million soldiers
have died in U.. S. wars since
1861! More than twenty million
soldiers have fought on the U.S.
side in those wars over the past 130
years! That’s what Veterans Day is
all about.

The decision of the committee
was that the policy be left
unchanged and that chairperson
David Brewer deliver the group’s
recommendation to the board at
their next regular meeting to be
held on November 19.
The Long Range Planning
Committee established by the
WOISD board on October 23 also
met on Wednesday evening to
formulate recommendations to be
taken to the board that relates to
general renovation and construction
within the district.
Chairperson Merrie Tallcy-Pope
stated that the goal of the commit-
tee is to establish a comprehensive
scope of the construction needs for
the district. Therefore, it will be
recommended to the board that there
be meetings held on each individual
campus in a "town meeting" for-
mat. Campus improvement teams

District school board met at the
Brazos High School library on
Wednesday afternoon, November 6,
to consider recommendations on the

consideration.
The group was made up of the
members of the Brazos district-wide

officers, and board members David
Brewer, Ray Sloan, and George
Sowa.
A copy of the existing policy
was passed to the group along with
a survey of teachers that was taken
at Wallis Elementary. Those that
chose to respond were 82.1% in
favor of the guidelines that are
currently in place, 14.3% responded
that a change was in order and 3.6%
had no opinion. The same
sentiments wcfe echoed by the
majority of those District-wide
Improvement committee members
in attendance.
A very clear message was sent by
the Student Council officers that no
modification was necessary due to
the fact that there has been no
history of hair length being a
disruption on campus.

The agenda for Tuesday s meeting
of commissioners’ court — moved
from Monday in observance of
Veterans Day —, would indicate
that appointment of a medical direc-
tor for Austin County EMS was
eminent.
Also that the court would have
received a final settlement figure
from its insurance carrier on one of
the county ambulances wrecked in a
recent accident and would authorize
purchase of a new unit.
As it turned out, Jose M. Ugarte,
M D., who was to be considered
for appointment at this meeting,
had two emergencies and was un-
able to appear for presentation be-
fore the court.
Dr. Ugarte, who practices at the
Eagle Lake Hospital, volunteered,
his services over a year ago after no
Austin County physician could be
found to take the job. The fact that
the position is not covered by the
county lability insurance was noted
as a consideration in finding a vol-
unteer. Dr Ugarte agreed to the ap-
pointment with no restrictions,
indicating that he would provide his
own insurance.
