is your social life a bore?
Surveys of the past pointed to
the fact that students were less
than satisfied with their social
environment at Southwestern
University. The summer C.P.C.
-—planning For—the Brown
Challenge designated social en-
vironment as a major area of
examination.
A committee of faculty,
students and staff are selected
for the study. Membership in-
cluded: Richard DeVere, Lisa
Dueker, Sue Gordon, Jaime
Gray, Douglas Hooker, Jane
McCook, Donn Miller and
William Swift. Four meetings
were held through May and
June in order to make
recommendations and voice
concerns on the social environ-
ment.
"We really zeroed in on con-
cern for students, faculty and
various groups on campus hav-
ing the opportunity to get
together," said Dean Sue Gor-
don. The committee decided
that the Union was the central
programming agent on cam-
pus. They recommended that
the Union should sponsor more
field days, picnics, tour-
naments and dances.
"We are losing a lot of people
to Round Rock and Austin.
There should be at least one
area on campus for people to
meet and visit between the
hours of 6:00 p.m. and 12:00
midnight," commented Gor-
don. "The coffee house has
already had a facelift and we
have ordered new furniture and

equipment for the SUB," she
added.
The committee agreed that
students at S.U. have an un-
usual amount of significant in-
put in decision making, much
more so than at most colleges
and uni versifies. Gordon
stated, "Our problem is that
the input is not coming from a
wide spread of the student
body." Students have the op-
portunity to be involved on C.L.C.
C.P.C., Judiciary and Board of
Trustees. "
Gordon added, "I feel that
the Leadership Workshop
presented by the Senate was a
positive experience in making
students aware of these oppor-
tunities."
The committee felt that com-
munications and scheduling
could be improved. "We want
to schedule all the happenings,
even those off campus. This
way we can eliminate most of
the conflicts," explained Gor-
don.
u
Christian activities on cam-
pus were also discussed by the
committee. Gordon said,
"Chapel attendance is up this
year and I am encouraged by
all the new groups forming on
campus." Young Life, Associa-
tion of Christian Athletes,
prayer groups and Bible study
groups meet on a regular basis.
Gordon concluded, "We need
to get together and improve our
social environment at S.U. Our
goal is to have positive in-
terchange between students,
faculty, staff and the various
groups on campus."
