spiring opportunity to avail themsetves
of the “last chance" for four long years.
The ladies did the gallant invited, es-
corted and entertained the gent* right
royally-as only the fair charmers or
Beeville are capable of doing. The fair
and charming hostess, assistea by her
sister, Mre. L. Kilgore of San Antonio,
made everybody have a royal good
time The largo double parlor* of the
Walton mansin were beautifully
deeorated with flowers and evergreens
for the occasion, soft sweet music was
rendered by a maxican string band,
gamea aud parlor pastimes were indulg-
edin at the sweet wiU of the merry
makers, until the time when the doors

composed of the elite of the city and
surrounding country. How many
matches were made we are not at libefty
to state, but sufflea to say that not a
few of our “bachelor boys" wear broad
smiles and speak of the last leap year
party as a great oasis in ute's dreary
desert.
W. A. Pettus, the well-known Goliad
ranchman, was in the city this week.
Mr. Pettus is one of the largest cattie-
raisers in western Texas. Recoguizing
that his success sntitles Mm to speak
“ex-cathedra” on the cattle business,
the Bek man solicited from Mm a few
opinions on the outlook of the indus-
try. “The outlook for the cattleman,"
said .Jr. Pettus, “Ta bright I think, at
at least for those who hare Improved

by over stocking. As an evidence of
the value of the improved stock over
the common I sold 1000 hall aud
quarter breed Durham steer* this fall
for from four to five dollars more per
bead than the common longhorn.
There is no comparison in the
value of the common long horn and'
the graded animal. Of all the breeds
that have been tried in south west Texas
I prefer the Durham. It is al. rge
boned animal and crosses better wittr
the common stock. I sold sixteen hair
breed four-year old Durham steers this
