THE OLD MAN’S DREAM.
I’m dreaming a dream this afternoon,
Of days accounted olden,
When laughter played a silver harp,
And youthful smiles were golden.
I’m dreaming a dream of the old-
en time,
When life was as -smooth as a
poet’s rhyme;
When my feet were bare and my
cheeks were brown.
And my heart was as light as the
eider-down.
I’m dreaming again, this evening time,

mangles melancholy; for it's the foe
of woe, the destroyer of depression,
the enemy of grief; it is what kings
envy peasants, plutocrats envy the
poor, the guilty envy the innocent; it’s
the sheen on the silver of smiles, the
ripple on the water’s delight, the glint
of the gold of gladness; without it hu-
mor would be dumb, wit would wither,
dimples would disappear and smiles
would shrivel; for it’s a glow of a
clean conscience, the voice of a pure
soul, the birth cry of mirth, the swan
song of sadness. Laughter!

AN OLD-FASHIONED SONG.
Mrs. Annie Somers Gilchrist con-
tributes the folowing charming little
story:
“I read in a local newspaper recently
a song entitled ‘O Bury Me Not in the
Lone Prairie.’ Away back in the for-
ties or fifties a mangazine was pub-
lished in New York called Graham’s
Magazine. In a bound volume of this
magazine of over half a century ago
there was a poem entitled ‘O Bury Me
Not in the Deep, Deep Sea.’ The words
were set to music, but I did not fancy
the air, so I set the pathethic words
to the tune of Tom Moore’s exquisite
poem. ‘Fly to the Desert, Fly With
Me,’ the song sung by the Prince Fer-
nando, disguised as a troubadour, to
the Princess Laila Rookh on her mag-
nificent progress with her attendant
lords and ladies through the vale of
Cashmere to the capital city of the
kingdom, where, in the royal palace,
she was to wed the crown prince. The
song set to this exquisite flowing mel-
ody became a great favorite with all
classes, though I don’t recall the au-
thor of the song.
“Graham’s was a magazine of fash-
ion and literature, leading writers of
the day were its contributors and it
was quite as popular as Godey’s La-
dies’ Book in those ante-bellum times.
The song is as follows:
O Bury Me Not In the Deep, Deep Sea.
“O bury me not in the deep sea,”
The words came faint and mournfully
From the pallid lips of a youth who lay
On the cabin couch where, day by day,
He had wasted and pined till o’er his
brow
The death shade slowly passed, and
now
The land and his fond loved home was
nigh
They had gathered around to see him
die.
‘Let my. death slumber be where a
mother’s prayer
And a sister’s tears can be blended
there.
Oh, it will be sweet ere the heart
throbs o’er
To know its fount will gush no more.

‘A riot,” said Maggie, speaking up

“Possibly,” said the teacher; “but
that is not what I mean. Tommy, you
may take the question. Three ban-

one banana apiece for each boy; now
three bananas among seven boys would

“Three banans, min,” answered
Tommy.
“I know, but three into seventeen

“Three banans wou’d go into seven-

Tommy confidently.
