Make an appointment with the neu-
rosurgeon. A follow-up visit is manda-
tory. At that time, the doctor should
give the family some much-needed
advice about how to handle the symp-
toms that are troubling your son.
DEAR DR. GOTT: Willie and John-
ny are in 4th grade. Willie has AIDS.
They get into a fight. Johnny bloodies
Willie’s nose and skins a knuckle on
Willie’s teeth. Does Johnny need to
get checked for AIDS?
DEAR READER: Johnny has a po-
tential exposure to AIDS because Wil-
lie’s blood may have entered the
wound on Johnny’s knuckle. Admit-
tedly, this is an unusual situation but
the risk, albeit small, is there. Wheth-
er Johnny should be checked for AIDS
is a matter best taken up with his
doctor.

DOWN
The AIDS virus is spread from one
person to another by intimate sexual
activity or by blood. I wish that John-
ny hadn’t bloodied Willie’s nose. A
simple fight between children is one
thing; the transfer of blood or saliva
from an AIDS patient to an uninfected
person is quite another, and increases
the risk of AIDS transmission

Ann Landers
Dear Ann Landers: Is this the
‘Me Generation,” I ask you? A
person is given a free room at a
lodge for 14 nights and doesn’t
leave the housekeeper a dime.
The guest was an official at a
horse show in a New England
resort town. She drove a 1988 Saab,
which suggests that she might have
a few bucks.
The housekeeper tended her
room daily and gave excellent
service, and there was never a
complaint. In case the ignoramus
doesn’t know any better, the cus-
tomary gratuity is $1 per room, per
night. Tell’em, Annie. -- TIRED
DEAR TIRED: Cleaning up after
people is not exactly a day at the
beach. Hotel and inn maids deserve
at least $1 a night per room. You
wouldn’t expect a bellman to carry
your bags for nothing. Why be less
considerate of the maid who has a
much dirtier job?
Dear Ann Landers: My parents
have been married for 40 years,
during which my father has been
consistently late for everything. I
am talking about church, weddings,
funerals, parties, just name it. My
older brothers tell me it was not
unusual for them to wait for an
hour before Dad picked them up
from swim practice.
I cannot count the number of
times we have sat in the car waiting
for him. He can be all ready to go
and then suddenly remember that
he has to make a phone call or look
for a map for directions. When he
used to call from work and say,
“Hold supper for me. I’m leaving
right away,” we knew it would be
at least an hour, so we would sit
right down and eat.
Mom believes it is a subconscious
technique for controlling people.
Whatever it is, she would like him
to stop it. Any comments or
suggestions will be welcome. Your
answer will be posted on Mom’s
refrigerator door. -- KANSAS CITY
DEAR K.C.: I believe your moth-
er is right, but whatever his reason,
don’t expect any radical changes
after 40 years.
My advice to people who put
themselves at the mercy of turtles is
this: Chances of changing a slow-
poke are very small - so change
yourself. Stop fussing, fuming and
yelling. Also stop allowing yoursell
to be victimized. Always work out
an alternative plan. Let him know
that if he isn’t ready within a
reasonable period of time you’ll go
without him. Then do it, no matter
