The UPI learned early today of
Castro’s decision to resign.
The decision was confirmed by
the official newspaper of Castro's
"26th of July movement " Revol-
cion put out an extra with a big
headline: "FIDEL RESIGNS",
The newspaper said it learned
that Castro "took the last f e w
hours the decision to resign his
job which he accepted some few
months ago because of the im-
perative national need."
"It is also known that the rea-
sons for this decision will un-
doubtedly shake public opinion
and will be announced by Fidel
himself today at a press confer
ence.
“It is understood that there are
serious and justified reasons for
this decision by the man who has
outstanding features as to the con-
viction and responsibility of his
acts.”
The bearded Castro who spear-
headed the two - year revolution
which overthrew Fulgencio Batis-

The newspaper also urged the
people to "keep calm... nd trust
in the sense of responsibility and
duty of the men who direct the
destiny" of Cuba.
