PREDICTION
The Jets have had three straight 3-11 seasons. Their only
quest now is to be more competitive. But any frank
appraisal projects them as losers again My pick: FIFTH
in AFC East.
DEFENSE
Raft of problems beset this unit. Mike Kadish. their best
lineman, failed to report because of contract hassle. A
rookie, Dee Hardison, has been pencilled in at tackle,
alongside Phil Dokes, a failure in '77. The ends, Sherman
White and Ben Williams, haven't delivered pass rush The
linebacking is a battle zone. Only one they can count on is
Shane Nelson, a free agent from last year. It gets a little
better in the secondary, where the lineup is the same,
with quality players in Mario Clark at the corner and Tony
Greene at free safety. They'll be poring over the waiver
lists for help. Rusty Jackson has been brought in to
challenge punter Marv Bateman. Rating — C-
said.
But the lawyer added, “It will
be decided this week (by the
umpires) whether to strike
before the NLRB makes its de-
cision. I don’t think we will sit
back and wait."
Phillips said the umpires’ as-
sociation executive board,
which consists of four National
League and three American
League umps, would confer by
phone, probably today and
Wednesday, to make a final de-
cision on the strike.
National League President
Chub Feeney, contacted at the
San Francisco Giants-New
York Mets game in New York,
said a strike "is not going to
happen.”
OFFENSE
It s all in the hands of Richard Todd, who's tabbed the
only untouchable on Jet roster. He was remarkable in
early part of '77 until he hurt his knee Club's future rests
with him. Wesley Walker was brilliant in debut as wide
receiver. If Mickey Shuler develops at tight end, Jerome
Barkum could play wide spot again. And there's still
Richard Caster The running backs should only be so
good Clark Gaines is set, but other set back is wide
open Charley White could do it if he didn't fumble.
There's important addition to forward wall in Chris Ward,
No. 1 draft pick. He and Marvin Powell make impressive
brace of tackles. Randy Rasmussen at guard is last link to

PROSPECTUS
Chuck Knox, coming across from Los Angeles, starts
from scratch, literally Money, omnipresent in NFL these
days, is about all Bills have The O.J Simpson era is over
But I have a lot of confidence in Knox’s ability as
organizer and astute football theoretician On that basis
alone, there will be improvement in '78.
OFFENSE
Even without O.J., all is not lost. The line has a pair of
guards, Joe DeLamielleure and Reggie McKenzie, who'll
match up with anybody Tackle Joe Devlin is a comer
Paul Seymour could always be moved from tight end For
offensive sparkle, Joe Ferguson has already proved he
can heave touchdown passes in bunches. The problem is
finding a target Bob Chandler, one of best in game, is
virtually only one among wide receivers. And he's not a
real deep threat. At tight end, Reuben Gant is fine for
passing situations No one says O.J. won't be missed,
but rookie Terry Miller was a prize catch in the draft. The
placekicking job is open, with Tom Dempsey likely.
Rating -C +
PROSPECTUS
Walt Michaels has shown firm, fair hand as coach But
Jets as team have long way to go because of previous
organizational failures They have the potential to
surprise a few people with scoring thrusts, but the
defense is just too porous to expect an overall winning
season Means they're dedicated to youth program.
PREDICTION
Look for rookie back Miller to be first-year whiz. Other
than that, Bills are not going to have much to brag about in
this first rebuilding season of Knox regime. Pick 'em
FOURTH in AFC East.
DEFENSE
Gave up too much yardage last year and they've still got
problems. Front line is a shambles. Soph Joe Klecko
appears to be only quality player on hand. Got rid of Car
Barzilauskas, Richard Neal Outlook improves at line-
backer, where Greg Buttle, Larry Keller, Bob Martin are
young and eager Addition of rookie Mark Merrill will let
them use 5-4 alignment much of the time. The secondary
is even better because Shafer Suggs and Burgess Owens
are excellent pair of safeties, ready to fulfill high
expectations. Bobby Jackson has been a surprise at the
corners, which need help. Bruce Harper is capable return
man Punting has been disappointing. Rating — C-
