Baylor 27-14.

season as an SWC member in 1976, has
the whole team doing it this year. In
fact, some of the Houston linemen have

Everytime a lineman ripe off Davis’
tear-away Jersey he has to look at
“Think Cotton."

The Dallas Cowboys have returned to Super Bowl form - but
whether they’ve done it in time to return to the Super Bowl is
another matter.
“It was the best we've played all year, but we’ve got to keep
playing like this or we won’t make the playoffs,” Coach Tom
Landry said Sunday after Tony Dorsett, Robert Newhouse, Ro-
ger Staubach and BiUy Joe DuPree teamed up to mangle the
Green Bay Packers 42-14.
Dorsett, in the doghouse in recent weeks, rushed for 149 yards
and two touchdowns (covering 9 and 33 yards), Newhouse ran
for 101 yards and two more touchdowns (14 and 3 yards) and
Staubach passed to DuPree for another two scores (8 and 11
yards).
In the rest of the National Football League, it was Los Angeles
10, Pittsburgh 7; Houston 26, New England 23, San Diego 29,
Kansas City 23 in overtime; Miami 25, Buffalo 24; Minnesota 17,
Chicago 14; Atlanta 20, New Orleans 17; Baltimore 17, Seattle
14; Philadelphia 17, New York Jets 9; Detroit 34, Tampa Bay 23;
St. Louis 16, San Francisco 10; Denver 19, Cleveland 7, and
Washington 16, New York Giants 13 in overtime.
Dallas, 7-4, still trails Washington by one game in the National
Conference East. The Packers, also 7-4, are tied with Minnesota
for first in the NFC Central.
The Cowboys had lost to Minnesota and Miami the last two
games, looking lacklustre and sometimes downright in-
competent. But they put everything together against Green Bay
—to the dismay of Packer Coach Bart Starr.
“You saw a team play like a Super Bowl team,” he said of the
Cowboys. "They’re a magnificent team.”
"Just a day at the office," said Dorsett - but Green Bay
quarterback David Whitehurst, who completed just three of 16
passes for 31 yards before being hurt, saw things differently.
“We just stunk it up out there,” he muttered.
Rams 16, Steelers 7
Pat Haden, harrassed most of the night by Pittsburgh’s de-
fense and aware that his wife, Cindy, was in the hospital about to
give birth to their first child, beat the pressure with less than 5%
minutes to play, whipping a game-winning 10-yard scoring pass
to Willie Miller.

The Houston Cougars are off this
week, and do they ever deserve’it
For the second time in three years,
they have ventured into the lair of the
perennial Southwest Conference bully
boy but refused to assume the poee of a
90-pound weakling.
In fact, Houston acted more like a
Jolly Red Giant with a bad headache as
the Cougars handled the Texas
Longhorns 10-7 Saturday. There were
over 83,000 witnesses-largest football
crowd in the history of the Southwest
Now all Houston has to do after a
week’s vacation-is whip either Rice
or Texas Tech for at least an SWC tie
and the right to the host role in the
Cotton Bowl.
Houston quarterback Danny Davis,
the catalyst to the wondrous Cougar
Veer offense, says he wants both games
and then perhaps some national honors.
“Everybody is saying we only have to
win one of two,” said Davis. “Well, I
want to win both of them."
Davis has dreams of a possible
national title for the Cougars who lost
their opener to Memphis State then won
eight straight.
“Who's to My (unbeaten) Penn State
won’t play us in the Cotton Bowl?” said
Davis. “It's possible we can win the
national championship.”
Penn State, which loves to come to
the Cotton Bowl, has a KM) record and
can choose its bowl as the Nittany Lions
seek their first national championship.
Penn State can't My where it is going
until this Saturday.
Houston has never won a national
title but did real well in the Cotton Bowl
two years ago, defeating an unbeaten,
untied Maryland team. The Cougars
beat Texas in Memorial Stadium 30-0
that year.
Houston Coach Bill Yeoman adopts a
play-them-one-at-atime stance.

The 42 potato were the moat
scored on the Packers in a game
since the New York Giants won
42-40 in the 1871 opener. Most
principals agreed that the
Packers were victims of poor
schedule timing because the
Cowboys feel they cannot afford
another defeat.
“You took at films of their
other games and they really
hadn’t played that well,” Pack-
ers defensive end Mike Butler
said. “They knew they had to
come together, and they really
did. Championship caliber
teams do that. They get their
backs to the wall and they come
together. That’s what we have
to do.”
“It was the best we’ve played

Coach Tom Landry Mid. “Our
whole team worked good all

selves turned loose in the last

Tonight we just turned loose."
