MIAMI (AP) - Oklahoma avenged its only
defeat by winning this year’s Orange Bowl,
but the victory only added to the Sooners’
frustration.
Oklahoma ran up a 31-10 lead then held off
Nebraska for a 31-24 victory in the “Rematch
Bowl.” Nebraska won at Lincoln in
November, 17-14.
Topranked Penn State’s Sugar Bowl loss to
Alabama left the fourth-ranked Sooners, 11-1,
with a longshot chance of moving ahead of
two other oncebeaten teams, Alabama and
Southern Cal, in the Associated Press poll
that will be announced Wednesday.

Brett is 25 years old - he’ll be 26 in May. He has just
completed his fifth full season in the majors for Kansas
City, with a career batting average over .300. In 78, he
batted .294. The California-bred bachelor is now a Kansas
City fixture and one of the bright stars in the major
leagues.

Only a strong bleat by the front office of the
Oakland Raiders, charging a vendetta, forestalled
the threatened suspension of safety Jack Tatum
(often embroiled in charges of violence) after he
roughed up a couple of the Denver Broncos on
legitimate tackles. Tatum has become a marked
man among league officials.

Now is the time to attack the rats and mice
infesting your home and outbuildings. These
rodents are living and feeding in your homes
now. During the winter months, rats and mice
leave the fields which are their natural habitat
and invade barns and homes for warmth and a
more readily available food source. So, before
these pests migrate back to their natural
habitat this spring to breed and multiply, attack
them now with Vacon, D-Con, Greenlight or
some other efficient rat and mouse bait. At the
same time, protect yourself by placing these
baits in a locking Bait Box to keep these

terback Thomas Lott, who scored two touch-
downs while directing the devastating Sooner
Wishbone offense.
“How can you forget losing to them?”
asked Lott, who fumbled five times at Ln-
coin. “Something like that affects your life so
much.”
The Sooners may have cost themselves a
few first-place votes by getting outscored 14-0
in the final quarter. Lott lost a fumble in the
quarter, and Nebraska scored a touchdown on
the game's final play.
“We were thinking that if the other teams
played close games, which they did, and we
came in here and scored a lot of points and
beat them bad, we cOuld move in there,” Sims
said.

The tipoff:
The best rebounder in pro basketball - according
to no less an authority than Jack Ramsay, the coach
of the Portland Trail Blazers — is Moses Malone, the
nimble center of the Houston Rockets. “Particular-
ly,” says Jack, "off the offensive boards.”
Q. Is Earl Campbell of the Houston Oilers eligible for the
most valuable player award la the National Football
League even though be to only a rookie? — P.A., Orange,
Tex.
Q. I would like to know the reason for the tag Coach John
Madden wears on his belt loop during a game. — Gregg
Singletary, Fairhope, Ala.
That is actually Madden’s ticket credential for entrance
to the stadium and to be on the field. Most coaches give
them away to sidelines hangers-on. But the Oakland coach
prefers to keep it official.

Q. Couid yea explain how NBC televisiom chooses its
weekly games in football? There seems to have been a tot
of Oakland Raider games with Curt Gowdy expressing his
favoritism. - David Steele, Ventura, CaHf.
You realize, of course, that NBC televises all the
Oakland Raider games, plus games of all other American
Football Conference teams, according to terms of the NFL
TV contract - excepting those games when an NFC team
plays at Oakland. True, the Raiders have been on seven
national telecasts this year. But three were on ABC and
one on CBS. It’s also been natural, until this disappointing
year, for the Raiders to be featured. Oakland and Dallas
previously had pulled the highest TV ratings.

He certainly is. There is, of course, no official MVP in
pro football. But the most prestigious individual honor goes
to the winner of the Jim Thorpe Trophy, established by
NEA in 1955 — and voted on by players and coaches. No
rookie has ever won — Jim Brown came closest as a
second-year pro in 1958. But Campbell could break ground
in that area. His chief competition seems to be Terry
