Snow storms moved into Minne-
sota Wednesday after a rampage
in the I akotas which left telephone
lines dangling and cut off comm-
nications in at least 17 towns.
A cutting 45-mile-an-hour wind
drove the snow in savage bursts
across the area. The storm, first of
the year for the Dakotas, piled
snow as high as eight inches at
Ipswich. S D , and disrupted tele-
phone circuits east of Pierre. S.D.
Telephone lines were out in Valle
City and Asley in North Dakota,
and slippery highways delayed
traffic for more than an hour.
In Nebraska winl-driven snow
blocked four main roads for a
while.
Rain fell over much of the Mid-
west as a 200-mile-wide band of
rain stretching from the Canadian
border to the crescent of the Gulf
Coast surged eastward across the
country.
