Mr. Hill says that on the way
up, he noticed that only about
one out of every fifty telegraph
poles remained standing in the
lower country - the balance hav-
ing been broken off at the
ground by the weight of ice.

This immediate section, on Sat-
urday and Sunday, was in the
grip of the worst cold spell with-
in the past ten years. A heavy
blanket of sleet covered the
ground, some cattle were frozen,
also chickens.
By telephone we were cut off
from our central office, and until
today we can not ring and get
"Central’’. However, we have
always received our daily mail on
schedule time, by our faithful
carrier-quite a trying business
in near-zero temperature.
The month of December is re-
