Last Monday was one of the big-
gest days Decatur has experienced
in many months. It was the occas-
ion otthe opening of the Red Cross
drive, with a parade arranged by
the ladies of the local chapter. Be-
sides these features, the merchants
had made a "Dollar Day” and offered
hundreds of special bargains, which
were quickly snapp'd up by eager
shoppers. The crowd was immense,
and the stores were crowded most of
the day.
At 2:30 the square was cleared of
all vehicles in preparation for the
parade, which appeared at 3:30.
The ladies of the surgical department
of the local chapter headed the pa-
rade. followed by a float demonstra-
ting the work of nursing and sur-
gery with Dr. John Embry as chief
surgeon. Then followed a number of
cars containing mothers of boys in
Europe and in the army, navy and
aviation section. Next came Uncle
Sam, followed by a patrol of boy
scouts, the band, and the students
of the public school waiving Red
Cross flags. A human Red Cross
formed bv Decatur members came
next, followed by Decatur chaptur
