America, from 1861 to 1865, was
plunged into a terrible Civil War,
whose effects we still feel to this
day. Most American Jews strong-
ly opposed slavery, although
there were some, both in the
North and South, who favored it.

South, Judah P. Benjamin, was
senator from Louisiana and later
a secretary of war and secretary
of state of the Confederacy.
