the people of south Texas are
in love with their section of
the state and boosters for it.

age in this section to young

The high wind added to the
destruction caused by the cold
snap and some vegetation in
all sections was considerably
burned, and much of it will have
to be replanted.
Many flower gardens, too,
have been damaged. Hydrang-

cut back.
The general rain over this

and it put a good season in the

surfaced with iron ore.
The construction work began
Monday when Commissioner
Mike Keer put the county’s big
grader on the job. Following
the grading work, which round-
ed the street up in attractive
shape, iron ore was spread on
the grade as surfacing material
and will make the street’ one of
the best surfaced thorough-
fares in county.

• The Commissioners Court of
Austin County met Monday and
went over the returns of the
school trustee elections and
checked the votes.
There were four tie elections
in the county and may have to
be settled by run offs.
The court while in session
discussed values with represen-
tatives of some big . property
owners in the county.
The court has met each Mon-
" day of this month, three ses-
sions—first, second! and third
Mondays.

• The lighted athletic field at
Wallis is now ready to function.
The lights were first turned on
Friday afternoon and perform-
•ed according to expectation.
The field’s lighting plant has
been put in by the Wallis Am-
erican Legion on their property
north of the legion hall, where
most of the athletic activities
have taken place in the past in
Wallis.
The Houston Lighting and
Power Company cooperated in
the construction of the plant,
which consists of seven 50-foot
poles with two reflector lights
each.
The plant represents an in-
vestment of around $1,000 and
will increase the Wallis Legion
investment, which is already
several thousand dollars in
Wallis.
• Wednesday the Sealy News
editor in company with County
Judge J. Lee Dittert and WPA
Supt. B. A. Lindsey went
through the basement story of
the Austin County courthouse
and saw the wonderful layout
this new underground story will
provide for off icing the official
family of the county.
Room is much needed in the
county’s capitol building, and
this streamlined basement, ex-
tending the whole length and
breadth of the building, will
provide the office room and
other facilities in rest rooms
and conveniences so necessary
in public buildings.
The excavating, which pro-
vides for a full heighth story
under the building, found the
foundation of the building in
good shape and the concrete re-
inforcement in constructing the
basement will make the founda-
tion stronger than ever, it is
said.
The under ground story is
similar to the project under the
Colorado County courthouse,
which is very attractive and

Mrs. Engelking was 85 years,
7 months, and 1 day old. Before
her marriage she was Miss
Eliese Goedke, of Bernardo.
She has lived in Wallis ever
since her marriage. Her hus-
band died two years ago and
two children, a son and a

uncle of R. A. Engelking, Sr.,
and Fred Engelking, and Mrs.
Lena Viereck, of Sealy.
