find Mrs. Yvonne Zellis.
Mrs; Zellis is also retired
from working, but not from
singing praises to the Lord.
She can sing like a bird

that. She is retired from
the working world, but not
from mowing her yard and
singing with the Voices of

Then we have Mr. Freddie

Mr. Sparks can be seen

In paying tribute to
Black History Month, we
are reminded of our ances-
tors and give honor to their
many contributions to our
society. There were many
whom we read about and
many more who never
made the pages. Many of
them lived and are now liv-
ing in my neighborhood
today. Take a walk with
me, if you would, down
Eastside’s San Felipe
Street and let’s take a look
at “Black History in the
Present.”
On the corner of San
Felipe and Daniels Streets
is the home of the Rev. and
Mrs. Willie Green. The
Greens provided many of
us with the best watermel-
ons in Austin County. They
have been around Austin
County all of my life, and I
take this opportunity to
say, “Thanks for the mel-
ons.”
Across the street live Mr.
and Mrs. Raymond Palmer,
Jr. Now here is an example
of a wonderful family who
have raised their children
and take an active part in
their grandchildren’s lives.
They are the grandparents
of soon-to-be-famous Carl
and Tim Palmer. Further
down the street, we have
Mrs. Alma Slaughter who
has one of the friendliest
homes in Sealy. When she
is not in the kitchen
preparing wonderful meals,
she can be found in her
yard making it beautiful.
Down the street from
Mrs. Slaughter, is Mrs.
Bredis Burditt. She is
retired from the Sealy
school system and takes
great pleasure in sitting on
her yard bench on a pretty
day and just smelling the
roses.
On the right side of San
Felipe Street, we have Mrs.

been a lifelong spiritual
counselor in our neighbor-

On the same side of the

lady, but if she sees you
passing by, you can be sure
that she will wave hello.
Across the street from Mrs.

on the front porch chatting
with friends.
Next door is Mr. A.C.

He can be seen in the yard
or riding on his scooter
down the street. He is one
of our good, hard-working
daddies who raised his kids
here in our fair city and
showed us all that hard
work never killed anybody.
Then we have the sweet,
kind-hearted person in the
name of Mrs. Maggie

can take a little nappy-

look like a princess! What
she can do with a straight-
ening comb is a work of
art! She can be seen

the yard with her friend,
Mrs. Annie Scranton. Mrs.
