Parents, are you ready?
It’s that time again. Time
to stock the pantries, fill
the refrigerators, hire the
sitters and get the summer
entertainment together.
They are coming home for
the summer!
I know all parents are
happy about this vacation.
It is a time when you real-
ly get to know your chil-
dren and how wonderful
they are. Enjoy! Can you
tell that I work in the
school system?
I hope all of you moms
had a fabulous Mother’s
Day. My children live afar,
but I was sure happy to
get the phone calls on that
job well done. Officer
Besch has worked with our
young people at school to
help them understand the
dangers of smoking, drink-
ing, and doing drugs. Five
student essays were cho-
sen from 180 essays and
read at the program May
14 at the SISD cafeteria.
Thanks, Officer Besch, for
all your hard work. The
winners of the essays were
Alexandria Shalow, James
Koy, Karanessa Langley,
Brittany Stevens, and
Katie Hassin. Way to go,
While I have always
taken note of Memorial
Day and understood its
meaning, it has taken on a
new importance in the last
few years as my kids and
the kids of my friends are
truly being put in harms
way.
Our young men and
women have recently been
called upon once again to
place themselves in dan-
ger for us. They have once
again responded magnifi-
cently.
I talked to my daughter
today. My son-in-law is a
Marine, and they are cur-
rently stationed in 29
Palms, Calif. He is also a
coach on a T-ball team on
the base. They were hav-
ing a problem with some
of the kids on the team

Memorial Day is set -
aside for each of us to take
time to remember those
who have given the ulti-
mate sacrifice in defense
of our nation. This means
the defense of you and me
and our way of life.
My family doesn’t have a
lot of past history of veter-
ans. My grandfather was
called an essential worker
and yellow carded by
Westinghouse to stay
home during World War I.
My dad was a chemical
engineer and was essen-
tially drafted by Dow
Chemical in World War II.
I was in the class of 18
year olds that got the first
draft numbers during the
Vietnam War and even
though one brother served
a state side duty in the
Marine Corps, by the time
I finished the ROTC pro-
gram at Texas A&M the
war was done and they
told us they really didn’t
need anymore second lieu-
tenants with all the com-
bat troops coming home.
