School may be out for the sum-

learning through activities that
begin in the kitchen and end in
the park.
Often, people forget that build-
ing literacy skills does not always
involve books, especially when
they may not be readily available
to some children during summer
months, according to Sarah
Hobbs, Extension associate in lit-

Extension Service.

Not everyone will be going on
family vacations, but there are
many learning opportunities in
day-to-day activities that will en-
tertain children as well as keep
them learning, she said. However,
a key ingredient is parent involve-
ment.
"Tests have revealed that if you
show your children that education
is important to you, immediately,
it becomes important to them,"
Hobbs said. "This also builds self-
esteem because children feel that

parents think they're important
enough to take time out of their
busy schedules for them.
"That type of self-esteem is im-
measurable." she said. "It breeds
motivation in children."
A good self-esteem building
game is the "old snapshot" game,
according to Hobbs. Let the child
identify the people in an old pho-
tograph, telling who is the oldest
and who is the youngest. Then al-
low them to make up a story about
the picture.
If old photographs are not avail-
able, Hobbs recommends using a
picture out of a magazine of some-
one both parent and child can
identify. That way, the parent can
also write a story along with the
child and they can compare them.
Young children enjoy filling in
blank calendars with the days of
the weeks and dates, she said. The
child can list different activities,
use colors and draw pictures to
mark upcoming events such as a
softball game or a day when they
can make a favorite meal.
"The calendar helps build com-
munication, learning and writing
skills," Hobbs said.
Children can learn by helping
out in the kitchen at any time,
whether it's counting silverware
while setting the table or reading
while preparing a box food such as
macaroni and cheese or gelatin,
she said.
Simple chores such as the laun-
dry have to be done anyway, so
involve children, she suggests. Let
the kids match socks by colors,
sizes, types and pairs to enhance
math skills.
Each trip to the park can be edu- ,
cational, according to Hobbs. For
example, tell your child to pick out
different colors, discuss what the
item is and what it is used for, or
have the children bring a number
of rocks or stones that are a cer-
tain color, then discuss the shapes
and sizes. Children will use obser-
vation and vocabulary skills.
If your children are going to
camp, ask them to keep a journal,
Hobbs said. They also can write a
paper about what they think camp
will be like, then write a paper on
the trip when they actually return
and compare the two essays.
"This gets them into the process
assessment mode of thinking,
which most schools will use in
testing, as opposed to the old mul-
tiple choice questions," she said.
Instead of reading books, fami-
lies can make them together,
Hobbs said. The child can also
make a "This is me book," which
includes things such as a favorite
story, favorite clothes, and colors.
"Once a child has made some-
thing this important, do not put it
out of reach such as in a cabinet
above the refrigerator," she said.
"Show how important it is by mak-
ing a special place for the book
with the child's other reading ma-
terial."
For children who really love to
read, Hobbs suggests checking for
programs available in the neigh-
borhood.
round bales
rains have caused tne fields to need
heavy repairs. Labor in repairing
fields once a crop is planted and
growing has to be done by hand.
All rice fields are planted on a
two-tenths landfall so the water can
travel to the lowest point of the field.
Levies are used to regulate the
water depth. After the water is at the
proper depth, the field is closed by
shoveling the levie which holds back
the water. This allows the rice the
moisture it needs to mature.
The problem is that too much
water, as in recent heavy rains,
causes the water to rush over the
levies and washes them out, said
Robbie Cook, who farms in the Eagle
Lake area A big washout in a levie
in the field not only destroys the
levie, but the crop as well.
This adds labor to the cost of the
crop, because after every hard rain
the fields have to be reworked, Cook
said.
“One week we had to shovel one
field three times to handle the
washouts,” he said. Cook, along with
his father and brother, farm 1,400
acres of rice.
“On a good year, we see 38 to 40
barrels per acre,” he said. “This
year we are looking for above
average losses.”
The other problem faced is
desease in the form of blast and
sheath blight, which can be
controled by spraying, Cook said.

Keep livestock and other animals

growth around bales.
Indoor storage and bale covers -
If bales are,to be marketed, stored
for more than one season, or the
location is in an area with high
precipitation, indoor storage or
hale covers should be considered.
Remember that the outer four inch
thick layer of a six foot diameter
round bale contains about
twenty-five percent of the total
bale volume. Studies have shown
outdoor storage losses range
between five and thirty-five
percent depending on the amount
of precipitation, storage site
location, and original condition of
the hale. Storage losses are usually
reduced by approximately
two-thirds with indoor storage and
by one-half with good plastic
covering outdoors. Just beware of
the side forces which stacked,
round bales can exert on the walls
of storage structures.
