BLUE UNITED
METHODIST CHURCH
Erskine Riveire,

In this materialistic age, many
people seem to be all wrapped up
in making money and then find-
ing ways to spend it.
If you can make enough to buy a
fancy car, live in an expensive
house and have plenty of spending
money, then life should be won-
derful. Or at least that's what
many people seem to think.
Indeed there is nothing wrong
with enjoying the fruits of your la-
bors, but anyone who believes that
this alone is going to make them
happy and truly satisfied will be
sadly disappointed.
God's Word tells us that we will
be much happier when we learn to
give rather than receive. Those
who have tried this way of life
have found this to be the case.
While Jesus was in the Temple
during His earthly ministry, He
pointed out to His disciples the
true meaning of giving.
Listen to Luke's account: "Look-
ing up, He (Jesus) saw rich people
dropping their gifts into the con-
tribution boxes. Then He noticed
a certain widow drop in two small
coins. He said, 'I tell you the truth,
this poor widow has put in more
than all the others. For all the oth-
ers have taken some of what they
have extra and dropped it in
among the gifts, but she — even
though she did not have enough
for herself - put in everything she
had to live on."' (Luke 21:1-4).
Jesus was trying to show the
contrast between giving when we
have plenty to spare, and giving
when it involves sacrifice.
That same thing can be applied
to giving of our time. It's one thing
to pick somebody up and take
them somewhere when you're go-
ing there anyway, and another
thing to take somebody to a place
you weren't planning to go.
When we give from the heart, it
usually involves some sacrifice on
our part. It's more than just doing
what we may consider our duty.
And it's more than just making a
token contribution to a charity or
someone in need.
Giving should be a way of life for
believers, just as it was a way of
life for Jesus our Saviour.

LUTHERAN CHURCH
Warda, Texas
Rev. Robert Boyce,
God our Father showed all man-
kind the true meaning of giving
when He gave His only begotten
Son to bear our sins and die for all
believers. That was a tremendous
sacrifice — both for God the Father
and Jesus His Son.
All of us need to be asking our-
selves how we can open our heart
and truly give of what we have
like the poor widow of Israel did
some 2,000 years ago.
Certainly it is wonderful to give
of our material wealth, but it
should never stop there.
Giving of ourselves is an even
greater sacrifice and one which we
should be willing to make every
day of our lives - and not just on
Sunday in the collection plate or
annually to the Salvation Army.
All of us can share our talents
when we serve others and help
them when they need it.
And the nice thing about giving
of ourselves is that we never can
give everything away no matter
how much we try. There is always
more left to give.
Through this kind of giving, we
will truly come to realize that it is
more blessed to give than to re-
