knowledge of our Lord Jesus
Christ" - or turning out like the
seed that was planted but failed to
germinate and spout and grow.
Some believers are always look-
ing for something important they
can do for their fellowman, think-
ing they need to be recognized by
others for their charitable works.
God looks at it differently -- and
He wants His children to look at it
in a different light.
We should learn to rejoice in the
smallest act of service that we can
do for someone — be it a child, a
friend, a neighbor, a relative, or
just a person on the street.
In this way we are doing God's
will for us at this moment - dur-
ing the hours of this very day - not
waiting for some perfect opportu-
nity or a special time when every-
thing seems just right.
May God grant all of us the pa-
tience to stop and listen for His
guidance for our lives. Those little
opportunities may come as only a
slight whisper or a passing
thought or a feeling at a particu-
lar moment.
Remember, God often calls us to
very humble, ordinary duties. But
every single one of them offers
boundless blessings for our lives.

If you ask most people if they be-
lieve in God, they will more than
likely answer yes.
But in the sight of God, having
faith is only part of the life of a
believer.
Certainly it begins with faith -
trusting in the God who created us
and has loved us throughout all
eternity — even before we were
born.
Despite his faith, the Psalmist
David found out that God requires
more of His children than just
trusting the Lord. First we must
listen to God. Then we must also
obey Him.
King David always believed in
God and trusted in Him. But
sometimes David wasn't obedient.
He was overcome by many sinful
lusts - and it got him in a lot of
trouble and threatened his spiri-
tual salvation until he repented
and learned to be obedient.
Listen to the inspired Word of
God in this regard from the book
of Psalms:
"I will instruct you and teach you
in the way you should go; I will
counsel you and watch over you.
Do not be like the horse or the
mule, which have no understand-
ing but must be controlled by bit
and bridle or they will not come to
you. Many are the woes of the
wicked, but the Lord's unfailing
love surrounds the man who
trusts in Him" (Psalms 32:8-10).
What God is explaining to all of
us is that along with trust must
come obedience. He says He will
"instruct" us in the way in which
we should go.
He goes on to say that He will
"counsel" us - give us advice - and
watch over us.
Here are some questions all of us
should be askingourselves in this
regard:
Are we obedient to God's calling?
Do we trust God enough to step
out in faith?
Are we willing to become ser-
vants to our fellowman as God
wants us to be, even when it might
only involve the smallest good
work or act of love?
How we answer these questions
might determine whether we are
truly "growing in the faith and

the Editor
Dear Editor:
Earlier this week, I appeared in
the Giddings schools to tell stories
from my books to the children. It
was a great experience. The stu-
dents were courteous and enthu-
siastic and the staff helpful. Fran
Pitts, Middle School Librarian,
had coordinated the whole visit
beautifully.
On Tuesday, a few blocks away
from the elementary school my car
stalled and wouldn't start again.
I was due for a presentation in
about ten minutes, and since I
was returning to my home near
Dallas afterward, had my cocker
spaniel, Bob, with me. A predica-
ment.
I flagged down a passing city
truck. Driving it was an animal
control officer. He called a police-
man, and Bob and I were escorted
to the school in style - in a police
car. Both men were polite and
understanding.
Inside the school, teacher Dixie
Reed took charge of Bob and I was
escorted to my audience - on time.
Mr. Stubbs, the principal, called a
mechanic to pick up my car.
When I was signing books be-
tween sessions, teacher Sharon
Biehle reported to me that Bob
was having a fine old time. They
were taking him to the class-
rooms, and I think every child in
the school got a chance to pet him
I'm sure quite a few got their faces
licked, because Bob loves kids. He
was exhausted but happy when I
took him over again.
When I was finished with my
stories, I was fed a delicious tur-
key dinner from the cafeteria.
Then Librarian Teresa Strick-
