and obscurely seen for a while,
has culminated and following an
inscrutable destiny, has passed
on and become fixed forever in
that glorious constellation which
all free men and lovers of free-
dom in the world most reverence
and adore — the American Un-
ion. Blending its rays with its
sister states, long may it conti-
nue to shine, and may generous
Heaven smile upon this consu-
mation of the wishes of the two
Republics now joined in one —
The Republic of Texas is no
more.’ ”
“When the last sentence fell
from the lips of the earnest
speaker, the beloved flag of Tex-
as was furled, and was lowered,
seemingly into the silent shades
of the grave. The boom of artil-
lery announced the fact. The
glorious banner of our fathers
ascended in its stead. All were
ready to welcome it, and make a
mental vow to stand by it to the
death. Many old pioneers, who
had done duty on the skirmish
line of civilization for years, and
had never blanched in the face
of danger and death, were over-
come and tears coursed down
sunburnt cheeks where they
were almost strangers. The wri-
ter will never forget that scene.
It was too impressive to be era-
dicated from the tablets of mem-
ory. It was a blending of sorrow
for the past, joy for the present,
and radiant for the future. May
God forever bless and perpetuate
the union then affected, and
which called forth those mingled
emotions.”

The scene here represented is a diorama of the
ceremony—unparalleled in the history of free gov-
ernments—which took place on the afternoon of
February 19, 1846, on the site of the first Capitol
in Austin (where now stands the Austin Municipal
Building).

Karl Hoblitzelle, Chairman of
the Texas Centennial of State-
hood Commission, in reminding
Texans that the significant dates
of history leading to statehood
would be remembered, with all
the inspiration they afford, in
the revitalization of agriculture
and improved conditions in rural
life in Texas, which is the major
objective for a serious observ-
ance of the approaching centen-
nial of statehood.
The Republic of Texas was
only two weeks less than ten
years old when the Lone Star
Flag was lowered and the Stars
and Stripes of the American Un-
ion were unfurled under Texas
skies above the Capitol.
The address of President Jones
was immediately followed by
that of Pinckney Henderson, first
Texas Governor, who began by
stating that: “This day and with-
in this very hour has been con-
sumated the great work of an-
nexation,” and in conculsion he
declared: “‘We have this day ful-
ly entered the Uniop of the
North American States — hence-
forth the prosperity of our sister
States will be our prosperity —
their happiness our happiness —
their quarrels will be our quar-
rels, and in their wars we will
freely participate.”
The memoirs of John Salmon
Ford, editor of the Texas Demo-
crat, who was present at the
ceremonies unparallelled in the
history of sovereign nations con-
tain a graphic report, excerpts
from which are here quoted:
“On the nineteenth day of
February 1846, the seats were
taken out of the Representative
Hall and Senate Chamber and
placed on the long gallery seat
of the capitol building, which
stood where the Austin Market
