Preface
It is with pleasure the publishers submit this, the Abilene
City Directory for 1917, to its patrons, with the assurance that
the work will not only compare favorably with any of its
predecessors, but even surpass them in completeness of in-
formation. This volume represents the fourth year of publi-
cation by the present publishers, and the fact that their efforts
in the direction of producing a reliable directory of the munici-
pality have been uniformly sustained by the business com-
munity, attests its value as a work of reference and as a guide
to the governmental, social, industrial, commercial and pro-
fessional interests of the city. The directory grows in favor
year by year and is conceded to be a necessity. It is also an
unequalled advertisement for the city, since the information
shown upon the printed page is distributed throguhout the
entire country to banking houses, manufacturers, business
establishments of every description, public libraries and so on,
in addition to which our "Exchange System" places it in all
of the Directory Libraries, which are maintained by directory
publishers for the convenience of the general public in all im-
portant centers.
The Alphabetical Directory of Names begins at page 33 and
ends at page 179.
Pages 7 to 31 comprise a complete Street and Avenue
Guide.
Pages 223 to 248 include a variety of miscellaneous informa-
tion, such as state and city government, county officials,
asylumrs, hospitals and homes, churches, cemeteries, courts,
federal officers, miscellaneous clubs and societies, postoffice
data, public schools, postoffices in Texas, railroads, secret and
benevolent societies and much other valuable niformation.
The Classified Business Directory, "The Buyers' Guide,"
covers pages 181 to 221.
Our cordial thanks are tendered the enterprising and pro-
gressive business men of the city for patronage bestowed and
to citizens generally for courtesies extended to our representa-
tivs while gathering data for this work.
