The English theologian and writer, William Barclay, once said that one of
the great curses of life is "cold water". One might be taken aback a bit at
first as we are reminded of the refreshment of a cool drink on a hot Hill
Country day. Why, even the Bible speaks of the blessing of a cup of cold
water given to one who thirsts.
But the cold water Barclay speaks of does not come in a cup and does not
bring refreshment on a hot day. He is talking about the "cold water" of dis-
couragement.
I am told that there is a regulation in the code of conduct of the British
Royal Navy which prohibits any officer from speaking discouragingly to
any other officer in the discharge of his duties. Nobody likes to have "cold
water thrown on their plans, hopes or dreams. Still, there are plenty of
people who are vigilantly poised and ready to do just that in any situation.
Their favorite, adjectives are "hopeless" and "impossible". Their credo is
some form of "We have never done it that way," implying, of course, that it
can't be done.
An inordinate amount of "cold water" is splashed around in the church, and
I am not speaking of the waters of baptism. We who claim the name of Je-
sus Christ ought to be the bearers of hope and encouragement. However, of-
ten without our even realizing it, churches and church members are actually
the purveyors of discouragement. One could hardly act in a more un-Chris-
tian way than to go about depressing and discouraging other people.
Robert Lewis Stevenson made this notable entry in his diary one Sunday:
"I have been to church today and am not depressed." A church service that
was not depressing to him was such an unusual phenomenon that it deserved
a special entry in his diary.
A cute but telling story came to me about a church that had a push button
switch that turned off the sound system. Frequently those who used the
church forgot to press that button, thus leaving the sound system running
for days at a time. Finally someone placed a sign beside the switch saying,
"Please leave depressed." Someone else added another note which read.
"Don't worry, I was depressed when I arrived."
One of the crudest things one can do to another person is to throw cold
water on another person's dreams and aspirations. Many a great vision and
effort has died before it had an opportunity to see the light of day because it
was drowned in "cold water".
I had the privilege of conducting the service of memory for Ray Sumerall
last Sunday afternoon. One of the songs sung at that service was "I Will
Lift You Up On Eagle's Wings". As it was being sung, I could not help
but think what a different world we might have if we were more willing to
lift one another up and less ready to pour "cold water”. •
The writer of First Thessalonians gave us this formula to live by,
"Therefore encourage one another and build one another up. just as you are
doing." IThess5:ll
