four years in a row, this season will
be a test of will. A test of endurace
and a test or resolve. Can this team
go as far into the playoffs as the
1973 Jackets? Time will tell.
Llano has six offensive starters
coming back from a team that
scored more than 29 points in five
games and less than eight in the
three others. The Llano offense

at tight end. With 4.8 speed, 185
pounds and getting better as a
blocker he is a tremendous defen-
sive player. Long will ease the pain
of losing Ryan Willmann at the TE
position.
Aaron Rode with 4.6 speed can
burn you. At tailback and fullback
last year, Rode averaged 4.1 yards
per carry. A no nonsense player
who has great work habits, great
attitude, and few want this year to
begin more than Rode. His speed
will keep him on the field all the
time. The problem is he may be a .
better defensive player. He was third
on the team last year in tackles at
safety.

. The success of the Llano
Yellowjackets over the past five
seasons is unprecedented in school
history. The seniors from the 1998
team had two years in a row in
which the team made it to the sec-
ond round of the playoffs. Seniors
like Ryan Willmann and Zach
Vassar played in five playoff games
as they were on the varsity as
sophmores.
The Yellowjackets regular season
record of 43-9 over the past five
seasons can only be bettered with
each new season adding to the Friday nights he will be the best
record and with a great core of new football player on the field.

Jacket
pitcher is
All-State
Long after the baseball season
ended for the Llano Yellowjacket
squad, accolades keep coming in for
pitching ace Justin Methvin, 6-1,
170, a junior.
Last week, he received word of
being named to the Texas High
School Coaches Association All-
Star Team for Class 3-A.
Saturday, he was named a second
team High School All State selec-
tion, voted on by Texas sports
writers.
Methvin, who will be a senior
this fall, has been pitching since
minor league little league and was
Llano’s mainstay on the mound
this season. He is a two-year starter
on the ‘Jacket squad.
In his junior campaign, he went
9-3 on the mound with an ERA of
1.10. He had 121 strikeouts in 71
inpings pitched and gave up just 38 .
hits. His opponents had a batting
• average of 150 while he was on the
mound and he hit 364 for the sea-
son.
“An ERA of 3.0 is good, any-
thing under that is great,” said
Methvin’s head coach Ken Baring-
ton. “Justin’s losses didn’t come
from earned runs, they came in
games where we made mistakes be-
hind him.”
Barington expects big things
from his team leader next season.
“He’s growing and getting
stronger all of the time,” he said. “I
expect him to gain some velocity
next year.”
Methvin, a co-MVP for District
26-3A, led the ‘Jackets to a playoff-
berth this past season. He has aspi-
rations of playing college baseball.
He pitches a fast ball in the low
80’s but his favorite pitches are
sliders and curves.
This summer, Methvin played in
a “thrown together” league against
teams from surrounding areas and
will be traveling to a baseball camp
at LSU in the next few weeks. He’s
serious about baseball.
“I gave up basketball last year to
focus on baseball and that really
helped me,” Methvin said. “These
camps will also help hone my
skills.”
