Polio Vaccine: Switch
from the Oral Expected
Vaccination is a measure we
take to protect ourselves and our
family members from conditions
that can cause suffering and death.
Polio vaccination protects against
poliomyelitis and is a standard part
of the immunization of children in
the US and many other countries.
A viral infection, polio can cause
paralysis, respiratory failure, and
death. Before the approval of the
first polio vaccine in 1955, as many
as 21,000 new cases of polio were
reported each year in the US.
The first polio vaccine was
made from the inactivated virus
(IPV) and was given by injection.
Then, in the 1960s, an oral vaccine
(OPV) became available. The
OPV is placed on a sugar cube and
taken by mouth. A problem with
OPV is that a small number of
children who receive it are at risk
of getting polio from the vaccine.
The risk is estimated to be about 1
out of every 2.4 million doses. Up
to 10 cases are reported annually.
For this reason the Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) is now
recommending that children be
vaccinated with the IPV only. The
goal is to completely eliminate
vaccine-related poliomyelitis. The
American Academy of Pediatrics
is expected to update their vacci-
nation recommendations to match
those of the CDC.

The Kingsland House of Arts and
Crafts is ready for their annual Fall
Show coming up this weekend.
There will be a lot of handcrafted
items for sale. This really would be
a good time to pick up your
Christmas presents for this year.
And don’t forget them for any
occasion during the year. This has
just got to be the best show in the
area, year in and year out. There is
plenty of free parking and good
food to eat too.
The Chamber has begun it’s
annual Christmas fund raiser,
selling Pedro’s Tamales. You can
come by the Chamber and place
your order. A dozen sirloins in a
shuck will cost you only $5.
Tamales will be available for pick
upon December 10.
Well, the Halloween Carnival
was a huge success. The Chamber
took in a total of $519 from our
cake walk. The Board of Directors
wants to give a very sincere thanks
to every one of our Chamber
members who provided goodies for
our cake walk. Without their
participation we would not be able
to be at the Carnival each year. The
money we raised will be going to
the Kingsland Little League, a great
way to spend our money.
Believe it or not, we have already
begun to see an influx of Winter
Texans beginning to show up there
at the Chamber office. It's good to
see old friends again. We are already
in the process of preparing for our
Winter Texan programs, in
January, Kingsland Old Town Grill
will be our host for the Winter
Texan supper. Windchime will take
the February program. We still
have March open at this time, if
any of our members are interested.
We will start working on our
winter bus trips in about two
weeks.
The Chamber has found out that
Dollar General has purchased two
acres of land on Hwy 1431. They
plan to have a new store in place
sometime next spring. If you have
driven around Kingsland lately you
will see land being cleared for all
types of construction. Peopleware
coming to the Chamber very
frequently asking for information
about Kingsland and their building
codes and zoning laws; looking at
building here. This is just the tip
of the iceberg for Kingsland.
Kingsland is not a small, rural
town anymore. It’s getting ready to
grow up.
